| 4.5 superb | JesusV4 | July 14th 10 | This album gets a lot of flak for lacking direction, but I think people are just confused by Sonic Youth's usual willingnes to indulge in noise, which they do more on this release than others. From the Burroughs artwork, t the awesome music, this album IMO is one of their best.

| 4.0 excellent | Erwann S. EMERITUS | October 2nd 20 | After the theft of their instruments in 1999, the band relied on oldass gear and prepared guitar. That kind of was a blessing, creating a clear separation with their other 90s material. Indeed, Sonic Youth in 2000 sounds like early 80s Sonic Youth: noise and dissonance are at the service of cryptic lyrics and surreal suspense. It builds up again and again, never reaching its conclusion. There is inherently no problem with that: the day you die also is the day everything that you built reaches its non-conclusion. That last sentence was pompous innit? It's still way less pompous than that 0.0 Pitchfork review. Third best Sonic Youth.

| 3.0 good | FirstStrikeIsDeadly | June 8th 17 | This album's okay. There are some neat chords (Thurston Moore's on the strings, after all) but most of the songs don't really go anywhere. This album can be annoyingly pretentious, too, mainly with the spoken poetry. On that note, fuck Side2Side, get outta here with that crap. All that being said, there are some times where this kinda clicks. For example, Renegade Princess gets pretty energetic, and Nevermind (What Was It Anyway) hits the kind of slightly atmospheric and lowkey yet memorable vibe I think they were going for. Other times are kind of charmingly eccentric, and the blasts of noises can be kind of interesting. A lot of this album is rather boring and unmemorable, enough for me to say this is probably the worst full Sonic Youth album, but it's not terrible.

| 3.0 good | TheManMachine | March 22nd 15 | Its passivity is reminiscent of 'Experimental, Jet Set..', but there is a unique lure in the utter uncertainty of this one. With all those specialty made-to-order guitars/pedals/whatnot stolen, here they are left to their own deviant devices: including but not limited to Beat poetry, warped keyboards, and more-often-than-usual noise codas; but mostly just different guitars. Classic Thurston pretty-turned-crashing catharsis reels you in, then later on we hear him mutter-rap over weirdo electronics and grab-bag percussion. I'd gladly listen to 3-4 word-randomizer Kim voices any day, as opposed to Lee's remarkably awkward readings (unfathomably stiff the first time around, improved on the title track).
