Decidedly funky, well-written, produced, etc. etc. - decidedly Rootsian, in other words. It's just what I've come to expect from the Roots, and in that respect How I Got Over is almost a bit of a disappointment, the Roots playing it safe and meeting every single one of my expectations but never overwhelming them. Then again, there's nothing wrong with being one of hip-hop's most consistent bands.

How I Got Over is a cohesive, focused, and timely riff on current events. The group's job on Jimmy Fallon
has encouraged interesting collaborations and fostered a tighter group than ever before, making How I Got
Over the smoothest album of the summer. The progression of the album, a rise out of the darkness,
perfectly encapsulates the hope captured in the new decade of America. Let's hope The Roots have
predicted the future by "rising out of the flames like a phoenix," as Black Thought asserts on "Doin' It
Again." With more projects on the way, The Roots may just be reaching their prime, just in time to bring
society with them.

My first Roots album, it's like they took a collection of Curtis Mayfields songs, stripped the vocals out, replaced them with well executed poignant-rhymes, some assorted indie rock and neo-soul guest vocalists and subsequently blew my mind.

Philadelpha is known as 'the city of hard knocks'. A gritty, blue collar city home to Rocky Balboa, the steak sandwiches, dirty gutters, and lots of crime, it's not surprising Philly's hip-hop scene has often mimicked the city's culture. Rappers like Beanie Sigel and Freeway come hard with a guttural sound. So, it would seem odd that a group from the City of Brotherly Love would lack thumping basslines, rhymes that will punch you in the mouth, or grizzly deliveries. But, The Roots have always been ones to stand out. All about finesse, the group is one of few hip-hop acts to have a live band backing them. With a jazzy style, and intelligent, finesse rapping, The Roots make yet another album that's a success on the charts - it sold 51k in its first week - and on the ears.
