I've never even heard this album, yet alone this band. This is just a sad tale of how I got

Much more trve black metal than their later outputs. It has much less of this Envy-type, post-rock-inspired screamo, and feels much more like a regular atmobm record with folky post-rock interludes. Very cool introduction to the band, they show some great potential 'round here.

Deafheaven's sound is already there, but the black metal influences are more predominant, still with the characteristic post-rock interludes they are known for and have come to use increasingly along the years. This early output is excellent, although less ambitious and grand than their full-length work.

The beginnings of Deafheaven were certainly much different than albums like Sunbather and New Bermuda, as a rawer, less nuanced sound is on display. That being said, the emotion put into the performances here, particularly the drums and vocals, make their 2010 demo a winner. The punk-influenced black metal mixes with slight post-rock leanings on opener "Libertine Dissolves", and the acoustic "Bedrooms" is a beautiful touch. Closer "Exit: Denied" is the piece most indicative of what was to come, with an impassioned black metal beginning segueing into a droning, slow-burning ending. The evocativeness of the compositions here really help further the emotion on display here as well. Thus, this demo is an important listen in Deafheaven's discography, if only because it sounds like nothing else they've written.

Not a far stretch from the sound the west coast seems to be advancing on as far as black metal goes. Atmospheric and comparisons can probably be drawn to WiTTR; which aren't exactly unfitting, though the music is a bit thicker and perhaps raw. Daedalus and Exit: Denied show great potential and expansion for this band.
