| 3.5 great | BillyBrill | July 7th 22 | This is not superb but it?s perfectly enjoyable to a Yes fan (like myself), and I may even be more well disposed to it, hearing little nuggets of what their sound would become. Between a 3 and 3.5 but going with the latter on account of the aforementioned bias

| 2.5 average | GamamJ | July 9th 20 | A proper meh album,it shows an evolution towards a more proggy sound, which would really be advanced on on The Yes Album. I like to say that before Howe, there was no Yes,and with Wakeman they came. into their own. This is the second and last album without the former, and is still very much based in late 60s pop like Beatles. However. progression in both instrumental skill, especially Squire and the guitar, and songwriting is shown compared to their first album.

| 3.5 great | Deadwing2112 | May 9th 20 | Time and a Word is a conscious shift toward progressive rock and an important stepping stone toward future classic Yes records. However this sophomore release should not be trivialized for its own qualities as the musicianship is rounding out in fine fashion with much improved vocal delivery by Jon Anderson. The album opener is a Richie Havens cover (No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed) and followed later down in the track list with Stephen Stills' Everydays. Oddly, Yes did record the competent Dear Father, an original but elected to keep it off the album (later appears in a reissue series). Peter Banks leaves following the studio recording and is replaced by Steve Howe. Although only the second album in the young band's career, it represents a critical stage of transition of its lineup and direction.

| 3.5 great | Onirium | February 28th 16 | Time and a Word has a great value really only when its role is considered within the development of the band. If it?s rarely truly interesting, it perfectly marks a transition to the golden age of their career. Songs like Then, Astral Traveller and, especially, the title-track, show early signs of the band?s melody/complexity duality which would later become emblematic of their sound. Many ideas throughout the record have an undeniable potential, but are developed in a clumsy, unskillful manner, and longer songs, The Prophet and Everydays, in which are thrown many ideas, seem, in the end, kind of incoherent. The use of a studio orchestra is, similarly, sometimes interesting, but rarely well-developed, to the point where the strings generally seem out of place. In sum, Time and a Word is among those albums from which you need to identify the highlights - there's still quite a few of them - and come back only to them.

| 4.1 excellent | praise jimmy EMERITUS | January 2nd 14 | Ideas are all over the place, with some either coming to fruition, others falling flat. The title track, one of the former, is possibly one of the group's best cuts.

| 3.0 good | CynicalComplex | February 17th 12 | Like a scrambled up jigsaw puzzle--lots of good parts that just aren't assembled together well. There's loads of latent potential in this album, most of which can't be fully enjoyed because Yes's songcrafting had yet to fully mature at this point. The future seeds of greatness that would spring to life on The Yes Album, however, are firmly in place.
Track picks: "The Prophet", "Astral Traveller".
