| 3.0 good | GamamJ | May 20th 20 | Not as good as Stand Up, and certainly not the two next ones, but still a solid album. After combining all sorts of styles on Stand Up, Jethro mostly strip down their sound to folky prog rock. It?s good, but could have more variation and more flashiness.

| 4.0 excellent | Deadwing2112 | March 25th 20 | The album opens with the flute and remains a prominent instrument throughout, representative of the band's newfound identity in sound with a more serious and lyrical content. As well, the band's birth sound of blues rock is now very much in the rear view mirror. Ian Anderson has established himself not just as the dancing, singing flutist but also the embodiment and soul for Jethro Tull.

| 4.0 excellent | dlbk03 | November 10th 18 | There would be no Aqualung without this album. Sandwiched between two truly monumental albums chronologically, Benefit deserves more love. Do you think the band could have jumped straight from the typical heavy blues plus flute of Stand Up straight into the sarcastic fervor of Aqualung? If you say yes, you're wrong. Benefit is much darker and more serious than Stand Up, and I believe it's better than both Stand Up and Aqualung, if not more accessible. Don't skip this one.

| 3.5 great | Alabaster Jones | July 1st 16 | While structurally the songwriting on Benefit doesn't differ all that much from Stand Up, there is a distinct shift in mood from the two albums. Truly, Benefit takes a much darker and more subdued route than the fun, upbeat one of its predecessor. Thus, while the songs themselves are of similar style and quality to the ones on Stand Up, they have a much different mission statement and overarching connectivity. Some truly excellent tracks like "Nothing To Say" and "To Cry You A Song" with its immeasurably addicting main riff pepper the tracklist, and there's no one song I'd venture to call bad. There's a couple that are kind of dull, but overall the quality of these tracks are kept pretty high. This was also the first album of Tull's to have John Evan, whom Ian Anderson said helped him write songs more freely. That said, he also said that this record didn't feel as variant as Stand Up, but it helped them all compose and perform together as a band, thus cementing its importance in the Tull lineage.
