Though it is a compilation album, this is my favourite record of all time. It encapsulates everything that was great about the early Smiths. It's great for getting new fans into them (it features some of their best early songs including "This Charming Man", "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" and "Hand in Glove"). It also features alternate versions so it is isn't redundant for people who already own The Smiths. This album is just quality through and through and I would recommend it to any music fan. Great compilation. Some of The Smith's best songs are on here, and in my opinion often also the best version of those songs. I generally prefer the more rough mix on this record over the very clean album versions. Some of the songs near the end of the tracklisting don't impress me like the first songs, but still in general it makes a nice listen.

The tightest and most competent Smiths recording, the mastery of Johnny Marr is laid out along with Morrisey's finest lyrics and the epic rhythm section of Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce. Nothing short of amazing.

I've always felt that this compilation is overrated. Why? Well... 'William, It Was Really Nothing' is the most pointless, throwaway single that the band ever released. The self produced version of 'Hand In Glove' featured here is, in my opinion, the worst thing The Smiths EVER recorded. An inferior version of 'This Charming Man' and a boring, piano stripped version of 'Reel Around The Fountain' also conspire to drag the album away from classic status. So, overrated then, but it IS still great, with superior versions of 'What Difference Does It Make?' and 'Still Ill'. Plus it has 'Girl Affraid, 'Back To The Old House' and the mind blowingly brilliant classic 'Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want'.
