good, angsty punk rock. davey's vocals leave something to be desired, though. his overusage of reverb (?) on his vocals is at times hilariously unfitting.

The Art of Drowning is AFI's best album, and marked the end of an era as they began to shift away from the fast paced, hardcore influenced style that is on display here. The gang vocals and 40 yard dash style instrumentals give this record an infectious energy, as each track has it's own defining moment. The rhythm section is very well done, building upon the foundation set with Black Sails. The riffs are simple, but appropriate, and they are played with emotion in mind instead of technicality. Davey is up and down, and I think that's a big reason the gang vocals play such a big role. He really is writing some scriptures here, can't say I get all of it, but it sure is fun to read along with the lyrics.

The Art of Drowning to many people probably sounded like a badass album title when they were teenagers; that would be judging the tome by its print and such. This record will astonish a great number of folks just for how extremely well it aged, and the dramatic, but natural-sounding compositions only make its condition better. Think of this AFI release as a transitional one - and a grandiose collection of songs at that. It captures the essence of hardcore punk and throws in Goth influences here and there, with the two elements never out of synch. The band's fanbase might've split into three since The Art of Drowning's successor Sing the Sorrow, but it's most likely this offering which can appease every side.

One of the first real punk albums I ever heard. It changed my life. To the pure insanity of Smile, the technicality of The Despair Factor, and the gracing existance of Morning Star, there are so many noteworthy parts of this album.

The Art Of Drowning bridges the gap from the goth-tinged hardcore punk of Black Sails to the
more orchestrated Sing the Sorrow. Fortunately, they manage to stick to their roots on this
album, most notably on songs such as Smile and The Nephilim, while still hinting at the
more dramatic emotional territory they would explore on their next album. Compared to other
albums in their
catalogue The Art of Drowning is slightly underrated, but I believe it stands as one of
their finest.

again, the lyrics really stand out. and musically it's packed so hard with emotion it makes you cry (i did), shout with anger, and pound your fists with frustration. the ever-present bass line is what really makes this album charge forward. the guitars are rough in sound but smooth in transition. vocals are piercing and meaningful. drums are determined and steady. overall just an amazing album. best tracks are: A Story At Three, Wester, Days of the Phoenix, The Lost Souls, Of Greetings and Goodbyes

The Art Of Drowning is the point in AFI's career where they stood on the precipice of change. It was their last album before their major label release and already with each previous release the winds of change were blowing. Here is where the band took the greatest elements that defined them in Black Sails In The Sunset and expanded them. The crunchy guitars, driving drums, unique bass lines, and shouted vocals are still here. The main difference from this CD to the last is that more variety is present. The band uses more melody and slows the pace down a few times. The end result is a beautiful thing. The Days Of The Phoenix is one of the catchiest songs on the CD, lyrically showing the band looking back at their beginnings. Songs like Smile still show the faster side of past AFI though, the added dynamics to the songwriting just show the band at the apex of their career.

I have to give my hate of to Hep Kat on this one. It was his full review of this album that inspired me to listen to this, as a friend of mine gave me their entire recorded history plus rarities. From the start its a fantastic album that keeps yo listening the whole way through with little to disappoint. IT combines the old fast hard punky sound Afi soemwhat lack now-a-days and combines the grown up attitude of the new and superbly. This album is the best example of Afi's maturity in song wrritting with great songs such as "The lost souls", "6 to 8", "Of greetings and goodbyes" and "wester". Musicianship is another point of merit showing more complexity for a punk band from each member to keep you entertained. Cheers Hep!
