Parades, like their name, know how to celebrate in style. I'm thinking dinner jacket, skinny black tie and a pair of blue jeans. You know the one. A little sharp, a lot cool. And when you've released a debut as clean and crisp as Foreign Tapes, there's every reason in the world to party: drawing from constellation of biting post-punk, warm indie-pop and a dash of honey sickle post-rock, if the sheer amount of hyphenating didn't give it away, Foreign Tapes stands on the razor's edge of the musical universe, redefining and breaking out of every little box on the display shelf. How else to explain the way the record delicately threads a line between crystalline sharpness and gorgeous, cascading layers of harmony? Or the way songs like Lung Full Of Light sway with an easy breeze while hitting like a ton of bricks? Or the soothing warmth of the Marigold's thundering climax? Foreign Tapes isn't just a party, but a lesson in how to throw one: new without being weird, innovative without being overbearingly eclectic - in a word, the most refreshing album of 2010.

No matter what your musical tastes, do yourself a favor and let 'Foreign Tapes' win you over. Searching for weaknesses on this debut LP by Parades is a difficult task, with the Sydney art-rock quartet masterfully juxtaposing multi-faceted indie, ethereal dream-pop & even complex post-rock. This self-produced album ebbs & flows brilliantly, and exudes a spontaneous nature which lessens predictability. Vocally resplendent, 'Foreign Tapes' is all the better for Rebecca Shave's guest contributions. An exciting album of 2010 contender. Recommended Tracks: Marigold, Loserspeak In New Tongue, Dead Nationale, Hunters & Lung Full of Light.

foreign tapes comes from an unexpected place, edging its way inwards from just out of the left of centre. At times it explodes into flourishes of sound before imploding back in upon itself, whirring and humming through tiny spurts of electronica. A thousand voices guide you through surreal fantasy, intimate heartbreak and the natural cornerstones of love and loss. It's equally floaty and atmospheric as it is ferocious and acerbic. It leaves you reaching for a dozen descriptive terms - all hyperbolic - at any given time. It's foreign tapes. It's not what you were expecting, but it's what you got.

If you like melody you will like this album. If you like airy atmosphere you will love this album. If you take those things a little bit too far you'll rate this album a 5!

This is a record that is full of ideas, fun riffs, fun instrumentation etc, but that somehow didn't really resonate with me. I'm not sure why but it's like the songs fail to bring emotion, their ideas being too disjointed to make the tracks jammy. I owe this a relisten. There are lots of cool drumming and intros (1-3,5-7), variety with 3 being more on a pop side or 5 being an interlude with really sweet sounds, diverse instrumentation - I particularly enjoyed the added brass and the conclusion on 9. I do have to say not everything works, like the post rock guitar on 9 feels super contrived, and the male vocals feel shy and subpar compared to the female vox. But I still didn't get as transported as I'd expect. 3.6
