i can't deny. SikTh have definatly influenced the way i look at music. They sound like nothing ive ever heard.

SikTh came out of my local scene not so long ago, so seeing this album become so acclaimed was a great thing, personally, for a lot of people I know. So there is a temptation to over-rate this slightly, inspiring as it was to hear that songs as good as "Scent Of The Obscene" and "Skies of Millenium Night" could be made in my surroundings. Yet, there are a couple of true clunkers here; "Can't We All Dream" might be the single worst song I own. So, it's an inconsistent record, and it occasionally falls fowl of its own ambition. It's still thrilling, though. The two aforementioned tracks, "Peep Show", the two "Emerson" interludes, and the Nick Cave cover "Tupelo" are all stellar tracks, brimming with energy and invention. Their ambition might hold them back, but as Death Of A Dead Day revealed, it's also their strength, which is what makes this unrestrained recording the finest SikTh release yet. Interesting fact: one of the members of SikTh is currently living with a girl I know. She's a major Shins fan. The plot thickens.

The guys from SikTh are no strangers to eccentrics, and their debut full-length The Trees Are Dead & Dried Out Wait For Something Wild proves this. Their metal material is an interesting mix of Dillinger-esque mathcore, alternative metal, and small bits of djent. Their vocals are an acquired taste, as they are some of the weirdest and occasionally obnoxious out there. Sometimes they'll throw a song like "Tupelo" out there and it's always a pleasant surprise when that happens, showing that they know how to write a great song as well as play their instruments at a very high level. Still, an hour of this is a little much if you're asking me, and while I absolutely love songs like "Peep Show" and "Hold My Finger", after the aforementioned "Tupelo", the album never reaches the heights of those tracks ever again. It ends on a strange spoken word story/poem thing, and that's cool, but the note it ends on is a bit hollow. All this said, they'd improve on the next and final full-length, but that's no reason not to check this one out.

Now why couldn't PtH take a hint from these guys and DEP and make good music? This album is just about on-par with Death of a Dead Day and which one is better is honestly up to personal taste. Definitely one of the better math-core bands out there even if the vocals get a bit grating every so often. 4.1/5

Heavy, intense and strange really sum up this album - the weirdness doesn't detract from how awesome it is though, and songs like topelo keep me coming back to this album again and again. first 5 songs are ridiculously catchy too
