What I did not know of YofL's earlier work (having only really listened to one more recent album) is that they actually engage in a lot of deceptively gorgeous tunes. This album is hella misleading when it comes to its heaviness, as the harmonies hidden underneath the sludge and gloom are actually thrillingly tender.

Apart from The Great Old Ones, this is the band that comes to mind when talking about Lovecraftcore. Sludge, doom, post-rock, shoegaze, atmospheric black metal and post-metal resulting in an awesome wall of sound.

The french post metalers release one the most epic records I've ever come across. Though they ditch their brilliant vocal delivering and don't exactly top their debut, Nord (which happens to be my favourite metal record of all time) they times everything else by 50. Year Of No Light's sophmore release is not only the best metal record of the year so far but one of the most purely colossal albums ever recorded. Monumental.

High-register, melodious guitars layered over overdriven bass and other elements of dense atmosphere wears thin after 45+ minutes. At this point in the genre it sounds as if it has been done thousands of times before.
