Disregarding the truly awesome "Airplanes", The Adventures Of... sounds like a deluge of somewhat good ideas that never really come to full fruition and ultimately fall flat.

Airplanes is great as are don' let me fall n ghost in the machine but the rest is very subpar.

This album is somewhat underrated by many, although it's certainly understandable. The Adventures of Bobby Ray display an alternative hip-hop style that is very very accessible. While the rapping and arrangements are solid for the most part, he relies much too heavily on his hooks. B.o.B employs the help of many different artists in different genres, most often to provide the chorus of the song. This comes as a double-edged sword because the hooks and featured guests all too often overtake his own rap verses to the point of the album being more akin to Various Artists featuring B.o.B rather than vice versa.

It was the end of April when I was watching Coachella online, wishing I was there, when I saw a young southern hip-hop rapper take the stage with a guitar and play a 4o minute breath taking set. Soon learned that the kid’s name was B.o.B and was releasing an album, The Adventures of Bobby Ray, that week. I had no idea of how huge this guy was going to be in the next few wekks and how he seemingly became the voice of the summer of 2010 with countless successful singles including Nothing on You, Magic, Bet I and the now infamous Airplanes. I had the pleasure of seeing him live at school and the show was a blast, the man truly has a blast and loves what he does. This album almost never left my car during the summer and is full of catchy tunes. I’ll be sure to have this spinning non-stop again next summer.

A definite surprise, could end up being one of the best hip-hop albums of the year. Despite the presence of a couple filler tracks, the album as a whole is stellar with a few songs that will no doubt by sweeping across the radio waves for months to come.

Putting aside the whole "earth is flat" theory and his anti-establishment views, singer-songwriter, rapper, and producer Bobby Ray (aka B.o.B) is a man with potential for sure, although to call the capabilities he shows off unbridled would be quite the overstatement. I mean - look, I'm pulling a parksungjoon - Ray's full-length debut album has a myriad of neat ideas and some alright staying power, though the record suffers from identity crisis and is front-loaded in quality. The Adventures of Bobby Ray is 12 tracks of hip hop material infused with both pop and alternative nuances, but whilst the variation is certainly there, the consistency practically feels like an afterthought. It's tracks such as "Magic" and the underwhelming "5th Dimension" that screw up the flow for me, though Ray is able to make a fine (if unimpressive) first impression otherwise. Angel recommends: "Don't Let Me Fall," "Past My Shades," "Ghost in the Machine," "Fame," and "Airplanes, Part II".
