It's a shame. Out of all the styles they've tried their hands on during the Acts and the Colour spectrum, I think they landed up specializing in the one I like least (during Antimai and Sunya).

Casey?s writing approach when creating Honorary Astronaut has seeped into his full time work with The Dear Hunter and
I?m not sure how I feel about it. The space-disco EDM stream of consciousness approach the band has been using the
last couple of releases I feel is taking them in the wrong direction. Most of this new writing style feels more and more like
listening to AI as the releases continue to come out. Not good.

There's just so little to grasp onto here. For a band who specializes in grand, bombastic, satisfying musical "moments" there isn't really a single moment of catharsis on this entire LP. TDH is one of my all-timers and it hurts that this is just... boring.rEven the wacky horn section bits and playful energy from Antimai are absent here. It's gorgeously produced and the band is in top form as usual but it's just a shame the overall experience is so flat.

Agree with the consensus here. It's nice sounding, quaint even, and technically very well composed. But the linear space rock opera thing just = lack of catchy hooks and memorable moments. Their most forgettable release

I admit that this direction in TDH's sound isn't my personal favorite, but Sunya is easily the best executed version of that sound to date by a clear mile. Vibrant and energetic while building on (and even retroactively improving) Antimai in all the right ways. While I miss the sound of the Act albums, the kindling is there for just as great a payoff with future releases.

I don?t really understand the direction this band is going. It just seems incredibly watered down with no memorable moments. Simply boring as many here said already

This was an absolute bore fest. There's wasnt any moment of any track that stood out or was memorable to me. May give it one more listen in case theres something I missed, but I'm dreading it already.

Unfortunately it seems like my tolerance for The Dear Hunter's music has run thin for me in recent times. The bands newest album "Sunya" is a new direction for them to take, and it regrettably highlights some of my least desirable qualities of this band repeatedly for it's duration.rI cannot help to find it all cornball at this point. Often times when prog bands use synths it often sounds cringeworthy for my preference. Sounding like keyboards used in a carnival or something else eccentric, and I do feel like this band has stepped into this realm of prog bands that I dislike.rBut, while their older albums did have these elements too, there where still enough subdued melodic moments, or beautiful ones to offset this loony delusional. Unfortunately on their newer material, that is not the case.

Awesome album as usual from this band. If you didn't like Antimai and you're not absorbed
into the world building and where this is all going, this probably wont change your mind.
However, if you are into it then the album really pays off and concludes in a nice
spot, setting up for what's next.
