0.0 | Blurry | August 17th 07 | I remember hearing that Coal Chamber was one of the most promising young bands in the metal scene back then, so despite the fact that Dez Fafara looked like a muppet, I decided to give them a shot. How wrong those claims were. This album is possibly the earliest truly generic nu metal album. It has no appeal whatsoever aside from making an attractive frisbee or coaster. I suppose if one can stomach Fafara's laughable attempts at vocals and the band's 'wacky' edge, this album may not make you physically ill, but anyone with taste would do well to avoid this abomination.

3.0 good | STIGMATIZED | May 15th 22 | I can understand why Coal Chamber's album became popular- because simply, it is catchy. Yeah, this
album is a definitive cliche of the scene (and here on out became an oft-replicated and diluted
cliche), but holy fuck they know how to make shit catchy as hell, even with substandard production
and bass tone. If it didn't have that, It would probably be a 1 star.

1.5 very poor | davezillaMP3 | July 25th 20 | Alright their is no denying that "Loco" is a great song, yes it only has six lines of lyrics, but the song is such a fun bop...however the rest of this album is really bad. like this album may have been the blueprint for all the other bad nu-metal bands to copy the formula of doing the bare miniumum to get angsty frat boys to chest pump in the late 90s. one bright spot on this album is the bass, but it does not help that the album after "Loco" is the same song copy and paste for 13 tracks.

3.5 great | redhotbowieboy | September 14th 19 | Coal Chamber were in the first wave of angst fueled alternative metal acts of the late 90s. This is one of the first nu metal albums, being released on February 11th 1997. This album starts with the menacing and insane "Loco". This is the song the band is most known for, and for good reason. It is a great performance that encompasses the bands sound. Down tuned few note guitar riffs, low slap bass, pounding snares, and frontman Dez Fafara's maniacal screaming and shouting vocals. Though this is not my favorite from this album, it's a great way to open this record. We then go into "Bradley", a bit of a slower paced song but still interesting. This was never one of my favorites, mostly because of how forgettable it is. The next track is one of my personal favorites, Oddity. The chorus gets stuck in my head every time i listen to this album, with the "This is the way its got to be" staying in my brain for weeks. After that we have my favorite song from this album, "Unspoiled" I love this songs intense loud quiet loud dynamic, with Dez getting more and more disillusioned. This track end with Dez screaming "Do I look alright to you?". Definitely one of the bands better tracks. The next song was also a single, Big Truck. This, like almost every other song on here has little to no lyrical meaning and has a lot of down tuned trudging guitars. And that brings me to my main problem with this album.
Though i adore this record I feel they never really mix things up. Some tracks blend together like "I" and "Clock". They just play some basic
riffs, scream and repeat. The other half of this album is not bad though. Some standout tracks are "I", "First", "PIG" and of course, "Sway".
"Sway" was the final single from this album, and is probably my least favorite of the three. It basically just repeats a phrase over and over then goes to the chorus. This isn't a terrible song but not one of my favorites. Overall I say for the time, Coal Chamber were a fun group that sorta lacked in originality.

2.0 poor | Jared Floryan | October 28th 14 | Nothing on Coal Chamber's self-titled debut album is diverse enough to be considered tolerable. The sound presented throughout could easily pass for a Korn release if you replaced Jonathan Davis with CC frontman Dez Fafara, and the derivative musicianship is not helping one iota. I could see Coal Chamber being memorable for some out there, but for those who *do* remember quite a few songs off this recording, do us all a favor and eat garlic bread instead of crying about how your nipples got too pointy during a punishing metal track.
