Both Wild Type Droid, now, this, feel a bit like Failure is overthinking things. Relatively bereft of hooks, energy, riffs. Songs are structurally all over the place. Ken's vocal melodies are rather droll and unmemorable, and he sounds tired. Some of the production is cool but that's not enough on its own. The arpeggiated guitar chords get tiresome. It feels like the band is leaning rather hard towards Radiohead-esque esoterica but that was never really their strongsuit, in my mind. The album's not bad or anything but the songs fail to meet their potential and cool sections are mired by boring sections within the same song. It's all just rather mid-tempo unmemorable.

Quite a few standout tracks already. Crash Test Delayed, The Rising Skyline, Solid State,
Someday Soon and The Air's on fire. Great follow-up to the Wild Type Droid.

Some good tracks but overall less atmosphere and rocking-ness (you know what I mean) than previous albums makes this overall a bit bland and boring for stretches

previous albums. It's not meant to be judged after
one listen, and it's not the kind of album that
clicks instantly.

It?s still pretty early on for me but songs like Crash Test Delayed, Solid State, the title track, and A Way Down could become some of my favorites by Failure.

Got my copy from Bandcamp this morning and have been bingeing it all day at work. Can't wait to get home and really crank it up. Failure are next level. Go see em live if you get the chance. One of my top five shows.
