Evergrey fans make no sense to me. Or maybe I'm the weird one, but this band absolutely peaked with the Hymns for the Broken trilogy culminating with Escape of the Phoenix. Phoenix was heavy in a way the band hadn't been since Recreation Day. Then they got bored. I'm sorry I don't care if they're respected musicians and songwriters; A Heartless Portrait was boring, and Theories of Emptiness was just devoid of energy. Some people have compared it to The Glorious Collision and I see that comparison. Sound wise it sounds like it could have been released between Glorious Collision and Hymns for the Broken. Plenty of people shit on Glorious Collision, and granted the production on it is ass, but it had some solid songwriting, certainly compared to Torn. This is like the definition of a 4/5 for me. Nothing special, but very entertaining, and something resembling a return to form after their worst album since Torn.

As a vehement defender of selling out I'm all for moving towards a more commercial sound, but Evergrey have basically become Imagine Dragons with integrity.

I had the best time listening to this. It was my favorite Evergrey experience. I just think they really nailed it this time with the melodicism

All too reminiscent of Glorious Collision (2011): multiple lineup changes, awful flat production, awful pale purple artwork, and almost entirely forgettable songs.

Pretty good so far. Stanne feature is great. More heavy instrumentation with pure cleans
abound. It's a niche style that sits very well for me. These dudes should probably slow
their output a bit, it's mental how many songs they put out. They are so consistent in
their sound that not much manages to stand out. If you enjoy Evergrey you are all
but certain to enjoy this, if you can stand some lack of evolution. The album art will
haunt my nightmares.
