| 4.5 superb | EasterInTheBatcave | June 9th 16 | Listening today, The Shape of Jazz to Come is not particularly challenging. At the time of its release, though, it was a revolutionary and controversial record. Coleman broke several of jazz's established 'rules.' The record falls between the rigidity of bebop and the chaos of free jazz. The songs begin with a recitation of a theme, then there is a middle section of improvised soling, and then the theme repeats again. That is the bebop influence. The free jazz influence comes from the record's lack of chordal instruments (there is a bass, cornet, sax, and drumset) and Coleman's use of a plastic saxophone, which gives a shrill sound. The Shape of Jazz to Come also features "Lonely Woman," Coleman's only track that became a jazz standard. Ultimately, The Shape of Jazz to Come is a landmark record. It was instrumental in the creation of free jazz and showed the world that rules, even in jazz, were made to be broken.

| 4.3 superb | Erwann S. EMERITUS | April 14th 20 | No piano, no guitar = no chords damn. On top of that, each ""track"" contains a brief theme which is followed by improvisations, to conclude with a repetition of said theme. So yeah, it's a difficult record. Yet, with each listen a new fragment of the puzzle imagined by tha dude Ornette is revealed to us. You gotta take your time with this one, as this is an improvisation work in which "harmony, melody, speed, rhythm, time and phrases all have equal position in the results that come from the placing and spacing of ideas". Edit @bludngorevidal: nah i didn't understand anything about this record so I had to Wikipedia the shit out of it

| 3.5 great | BillyBrill | August 8th 24 | Listen. Its good. I know I would like it more on a second or third listen. But I am happy to sit on one listen and just say Yep That Is a Good Jazz Album and be done with it for now.

| 4.5 superb | GamamJ | August 5th 20 | The album title is perfet. Coleman introduces something hitherto unseen. Total neglect of staying within the key, Coleman takes the freedom to play basically whatever he likes on here, leading to a huge rise in free-form jazz. A splendid effort.

| 2.5 average | TheBalderdashMan | May 21st 11 | With the exception of one song (the unappetizingly dreary "Peace"), The Shape of Jazz to Come has one mood: squealing frenzy. I can't count how many times Coleman pulls some form of bizarre, high-pitched shriek out of his plastic saxophone. The frenetic tone is effective and interesting for a while, but after 25 minutes of what is essentially shredding on saxophones and trumpets, I have to get up and start imitating a rooster in order to stay entertained.
