| 3.5 great | nipplehair | April 15th 26 | After nearly 20 years, the long awaited "Slipknot" album has finally surfaced.
It was always prefaced to be nothing like Slipknot and more akin to Radiohead or Pink
Floyd.
It certainly does not reach those heights but still has some decent material regardless.
Much of the album is stream-of-consciousness jamming.
It sounds like most of the songs aren't finished in a traditional sense, you won't find
the usual verse, chorus, verse, bridge formula here.
However, there are some interesting ideas
Corey Taylor has some great melodies and some unique screaming bits unheard in past
Slipknot records.
Jim Root put more of his personal influences on display here. Ranging from stoner rock
fuzz guitar, all the way to pop punk chord progressions.
Surprisingly, there are really nice bass lines here as well. Jim played bass and it shows
he is equally talented on both instruments.
One criticism I do have is the drumming leaves a lot to be desired. I have never been a
fan of Shawn Crahan as a main drummer.
His rhythm choices are one note and while they serve the songs well enough, they don't do
anything interesting.
Overall, I feel this album is great. It reminds me of the more melodic parts of Volume 3
and We Are Not Your Kind.
I expect many Slipknot fans will dislike the record. But there's enough here for non-fans
to enjoy an experimental side of Slipknot.
