While there are several classic 2 disc mixes out there, including Sasha's GU 13 Ibiza and Sasha and Digweed's Northern Exposure set, this Balance installment from progressive/trance prodigy James Holden is the apex of all mix cd's. Holden's song selections as well as his flawless transitions make for an incredibly dark, psychedelic and stylistically all-over-the-place set with appropriately placed peaks and valleys throughout. Holden is at the forefront of innovation in trance/house music and where his original productions and albums including The Idiots Are Winning show his capabilities and vision as a producer this Balance set shows his equally stunning skills in throwing together a mix that has everything a fan could want. While most people prefer the first disc one would be mistaken to dismiss the second disc, as it is just as strong as the first. Highlights from the first disc include The Difference it Makes, Outhouse Original Mix and Do What You Want. The second disc standouts are Meerkat's Colours, Gil Norris' Forme and The Wonderland Original Mix. This disc is more than just electronic music, it is a journey and an experience. Just one listen is all it takes to realize that Holden is different. He doesn't go for the mainstream or what's expected. He always opts to take the back road, the one less-traveled and it shows through his music in spades. Once you take the plunge you'll never look back.
