| 3.5 great | resident sputbirb with fancy hat | January 10th 26 | This remake EP turned out to be a bit of a disappointment for me. The new instrumentals are quite nice and its definitely not a bad thing to have some different interpretations of these songs available. Still, the comparison to the old versions will inevitably have to be made and while the production is a definite upgrade on the 6-7 year old songs, these also lack the more rugged charm early AZKi music always had. These new instrumentals are brighter now and together with AZKi's modern more restrained and controlled vocal delivery, they definitely lack that certain emotional grit those old songs had in spades. Without U and aoi yume especially are some of my favorite AZKi songs, so my expectations were quite high. And while I think AZKi's new aoi yume vocal performance is inferior to the old, raw version, the new instrumental is actually pretty neat with new pretty piano and organ passages. I do also appreciate that from A to Z has a bit more punch to it in the new version and Frontier Locus definitely gains the most from this redone version, the new instrumental is completely different and has shed those cheap sounding synths that made Frontier Locus one of the worst songs on AZKi's debut album in favor of a pretty swanky instrumental. I'll still rate this as a great EP, the songs themselves remain fantastic, I'd just rather listen to the originals, especially with without U and aoi yume.
