| 1.0 awful | Robbit | May 14th 19 | Quickly forgotten - and for good reason. My gut feeling at the time was that they were another band trying to get mileage out of classic AC/DC grooves (as The Cult did with Electric), but was transformed into self parody by the gratuitous showboating of Justin Hawkins. Disgustingly over-the-top and annoying vocals that even make John Sloman's performance on Uriah Heep's CONQUEST seem tasteful and subdued in comparison. It's difficult to keep the vomit in my stomach when I listen to Hawkins cheeseball Freddie Mercury imitations. This truly is pointless and unforgivable dreck. Who cares if it was meant to be a joke or not.

| 1.0 awful | BHAR | January 24th 16 | It's times like these when I wish I could give an album a zero. I really do. The whole CD sounds like as if they stole ideas from Elvis Presley and decided to make them their own. And also, what is so DARK about them? (Rhetorical question)

| 4.0 excellent | Antonius | June 19th 15 | Such an excellent debut album with great choruses and brilliant riffs, everything in a sphere of plain simplicity. Vocals are the standout element with Hawkins delivering impassionate and diverse performances, Recommendations: "Friday Night", "I Believe In a Thing Called Love", "Givin' Up", "Get Your Hands Off My Woman", "Love On The Rocks"

| 4.5 superb | Drowninginthebathtub | December 17th 13 | This album is one of the greatest guitar records ever. It's got that explosive Les Paul + Marshall sound that makes any guitar player weak at the knees.

| 3.0 good | Yay | August 23rd 12 | Unlike Wolfmother, who simply imitated the classic rock sound, The Darkness bring something new to 70s hard rock. A really fun, high-energy listen. Also, they broke up due to a drug problem, which is pretty rock 'n' roll to me.

| 4.5 superb | BigTuna | September 8th 10 | Why you ask? Because when all is bared, this is a fantastic, anthem driven mother fucker of a rock album. The Darkness understand themselves as a parody, and yet on Permission to Land still manage to craft unbelievably crisp rock music. Get Your Hands Off My Woman, I Believe in A Thing Called Love, Love is Only a Feeling, Growing on Me, Love on the Rocks With No Ice, and even Holding My Own are all superbly written songs. If there isn't a sick riff, there's a catchy hook. If there's no hook, there's a crazy riff. And finally, let's be honest: who the fuck else can sing like this guy? His high soprano has the potential to become grating, but then he transitions into a very palatable lower tone. Permission to Land is a complete rock record, hearkening back to the classic rock of old, while at the same time injecting a welcome freshness into the music scene of the past 15 years. You only have to watch the music video for I Believe in A Thing Called Love to know what I mean.

| 1.5 very poor | AggravatedYeti | November 16th 08 | I love Queen; Justin, you sir, are no Freddie Mercury and your band is no Queen. Stop it.

| 2.0 poor | MrUnderstanding18 | May 26th 08 | I'm sorry, but I just bought it, listened to it a few times, and then just got utterly sick of it. Justin's octave-straddling vocals began sounding fresh and original, but by the end they just made me want to put a foot through my speakers. In my opinion, a major letdown.

| 3.5 great | mmfan486 | August 2nd 07 | What makes this album good is it's length- suggesting that the band were under no illusions about those vocals; that there's only so much falsetto you need to listen to before it becomes rubbish- and the fact that it was fun. You have to remember that this came out in late 2003 when Nu-Metal was dying on its arse. Whatever else you might think about the Darkness, the rock'n'roll riffs, widdley solos and cheesey lyrics were a much needed injection of life into rock music, and let's face it, you couldn't help but enjoy it.
