This, REM's fourth full length album in as many years, finds the band working with a new producer and a new sound after three albums of jangly acoustic rock leanings and vague undersung vocals that perhaps even CIA decoders would be challenged to decipher. Here, the band picks up noisy, distorted electric guitars for outstanding cuts such as "Begin The Begin" and "These Days", but also strike a nice balance in softer tunes such as "Fall On Me" and The Flowers Of Guatemala". A turning point for the band that would see it leave it's indie roots behind while remaining true to all they ever were, Life's Rich Pageant finds REM coming to new life as a rock n roll band as full and rich as any you can name. And it remains one of the bands very best.

Clearly reflecting a band in transition, Pageant tastefully incorporates politics and distortion while stepping tentatively into new genres and topics. While the band does have a tendency to retreat into their comfort zone on tracks like ?I Believe? and ?Just a Touch,? ?Fall on Me? and ?These Days? are two of the band?s best songs.

I almost wish I could say I like this. I can see that it would be a good purchase for die-hard REM fans, but it just isn't my bag. From the first track, and my desire to break out into the ska influenced riffs of Baggy Trousers by Madness, through to the ridiculous lyrics of Just A Touch and Swan Swan Hummingbird, it didn't have enough to commend it. Cuyahoga and Fall On Me were ok melodies; Underneath The Bunker had interesting originality, and I Believe is yet another song that reminds me of End Of The World at times. Meh.
