Blackfield is the eponymous debut of Steven Wilson's side project band co-led with Aviv Geffen. Original members also included Daniel Salomon, Seffy Efrati and Tomer Z. Noteworthy are the appearances by Gavin Harrison and Chris Maitland behind the drum kit. This project is somewhat a bridging between Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson's solo output. The song structures are more streamlined with simplified melodies and perhaps less cryptic lyrical content. Geffen's vocals complement Wilson and augment the listener's emotional attachment to the record. Highlights include the self titled album track, Hello, Cloudy Now and The Hole in Me. Wilson's guitar solos soar throughout this set.

It's surprising that after the Stupid Dream/Lightbulb Sun diptych and In Absentia Steven Wilson still felt a need for a pop project. Whatever his reasons may have been, the result is a terrible addition to the muzak he has been so eager to protest against on his previous records. Oh hypocrisy.

Steve Wilson's collaboration with Aviv Geffen results into a captivating and melancholic album that falls under the alternative rock umbrella. It is accessible from all sorts of music fans, but the beauty of it lies to the fact that it will never become a trend or a mainstream hit. It is of those albums where you sit alone hearing it and enjoy it to death. Recommendations: "Open Mind", "Blackfield", "Pain", "Hole In Me", "Hello"

Wilson is kinda playing it safe here it would appear but I appreciate Blackfield for what it essentially is which is definitely justified by their debut. The songs are catchy, sweet and emotional and it's all in all a very solid effort.

Excellent melancholic Pop/Rock. It catches the atmosphere of a beatiful autumn day like no other album I have ever heard. One downside is the duration of the album, which is rather short and it has no sort of lasting effect on me. Pop/Rock as it should be - catchy, slightly melancholic and not too long.
