an interesting album that will no doubt be divisive. first few tracks are great, but it loses steam in the middle and back end. some cool ideas spread around throughout, but the heavy use of electronics leaves Kevin to meander A LOT

first listen and I dont know if Kevin or I really know whats going on here
Edit: second listen was far more enjoyable. Slow rush felt very stuck and forced where as this sounds like a completely
different artist but much more free and risky despite the overarching themes of conventional pop and house

The good parts (the beginning and the end) are really good. The bad parts (the middle) are boring and forgettable.

It's like Kevin Parker got a gnawing suspicion that people only liked his albums because they sounded like million-dollar technicolour dream machines. So he made this bold but only partially fulfilled LP that is far more naked, stripped to the groove and lyrics. It will not be well-liked but I respect where it has come from.

My Old Ways may be one of the best songs he's ever released, but it doesn't escape there are parts of this record that feel cheesy. I'm huge house/techno fan and my pessimism seeped in heavily with the singles after End of Summer. I don't think it's as bad as it seems as a collective work. Certainly believe this to be a grower, but might change this to a 3.5. The production is amazing, no denying that.
