Better than Pawns and Kings but still missing that spark that made them so good on records like Fortress and III.

On their eighth studio album, Alter Bridge very wisely don't mess with the Alter Bridge formula. Confidently self-titled, Alter Bridge is filled with power, emotion and top-notch song writing, manifesting the chemistry that these four guys have. With fascinating riffs, soaring vocals and magnificent solos, each song has its own sky-high choruses with Myles leading and Mark backing. Tight and robust as ever, the rhythm section by bassist Brian Marshall and drummer Scott Phillips is what anchors it all. Not their best work but definitely one that contains tracks that will stand the test of time. Tony recommends: "Playing Aces", "Disregarded", "Silent Divide", "Power Down".r

Say what you will about Walk The Sky but at least they took bigger swings back then, in
terms of writing memorable melodies and trying out slightly different production styles.
The subsequent two albums, especially this, are nothing but perfunctory forgettable riffs
that were written out of contractual obligation rather than creative pursuit

I think this album encapsulates the 20+ years of the band's successful sound and being performed really well. I see it as an achievement for the band being known for what they do best: bringing hard rock into a well-crafted level of heaviness and dark melodies whilst not being agonizing on stale rock cliches. At least to my ears.
