I'll definitely have to listen to this again...but it did not strike me nearly as much as it did some people, apparently. It's a perfectly serviceable "Deftones record" but I can't pick out anything that's particularly spectacular. I will say that the final 3rd of the record seems to have the most bite.

PM is a fantastic record through and through, but all the talk about this being the best thing they've ever done or even the best since KNY / DE is premium glaze. Ohms is easily just as good as this, and honestly a better representation of the band sonically whereas this is super melodic and brings the nostalgia feels with songs like infinite source and cut hands (legitimately two of the best songs they've ever written). To me, this is more like a succinct and economic career retrospective favoring the bands melodic / shoegazey side whereas Ohms is the darker, more progressive brother.

A band that is a bit over-rated releases an album that seems likely to also be over-rated. Look, I like Deftones, but if I?m honest the most impressive thing about them is how they?ve milked the same riff and melodies at least twice per album (and any attempt to deviate tends to kinda come apart at the seams) yet not get called out for it. This one?s got some cool unique jams, the harmonics on infinite source are tight (if maybe over utilized) and ecdysis is a sweet enough bassline, and milk of the Madonna is a refreshingly catchy guitar riff for the (pre?)chorus. But a lot of this falls back on the same old tricks of Chino falsetto-mic-distorting notes over a chaos of 8-string chuggery and Cunningham doing the Cunningham thing. That said, Chino?s experimentation with a more nu-metal delivery in the second half is nice, if not a total success in my opinion. I think This will go the way of Ohms ? hyped to high heaven and then, once the dust has settled and post-nut clarity kicks in, it?ll find its rightful place in the mid-tier pantheon of the Deftones oeuvre.

Great album, even though some of the ideas here
overall seem a bit rehashed and Deftones by the
numbers for instance the end riffs of both
Infinite and Cut Hands are just the Diamond
Eyes and Rosemary riffs recycled once again.

Went into this at first thinking this was more-or-less typical Deftones (which is still way better than most albums) but the more I listen to it, the more it sticks with me. With a discography as stacked as theirs, it's hard to say where this ranks amongst their best, but it's gotta at least be a top 3-5 album of theirs. I probably prefer this over Ohms.

I?ve spent some time with the album since its release and I completely understand when people say that it?s not
groundbreaking or pushing any boundaries. However, I feel like the negative connotation attached to that is
unwarranted. We saw a relative flop when ?Gore? was released, for its experimental nature and odd production choices.
Deftones yet again released a more challenging and less ?commercial? album with ?Ohms? and although a fantastic
release in its own right, it did split the crowd somewhat. As a result I think that Private Music serves as a superbly
executed break for the fans, where they don?t necessarily want to be challenged and just want to enjoy the music for
the very reasons they fell in love with the band in the first place. TL;DR - There will always be people that find issues and
get salty with the way general consensus plays out. Just enjoy the ride.

In 2025 one can conclude Deftones have mastered the art of alt metal with sprinkles of other interesting genres folded in. Is it very familiar? Yes. Does it feel a bit formulaic at this point? Yes. Are Deftones still writing super good hooks, riffs and succinct, catchy songs? Very much yes. It is understandable for people to go either way with ratings on this one but in the end this is pretty much the bar for alt metal and these are just well written songs. Favorite tracks are 'ecdysis', 'infinite source', 'milk of the madonna' and 'cut hands'.

Love that the hip-hop influence is back for the first time in many albums, best production since KNY, best Stef riffs since then too, and Chino has come off of autopilot after his lackluster Ohms performance. Good stuff, didn't expect to like this as much as I do.

Easily the most lean and cohesive record Deftones have released. It's hard to pick rstandouts because every track is good, but the second half of the album is so wonderful. The rlast five tracks all flow together in such a seamless way and contain moments that feel, rrespectively, like the best of their newer sound, compelling throwbacks to their earliest rmaterial, and emotional and expansive new territory. AotY contender for sure.
