Because the album is so sparse and instrumentally driven, it takes a good few spins before its beauty can be registered in the mind of the average listener, and if one were to nit-pick, one would conclude that there isn't much variety, with most of the album blending into one, continuous, droning wave. However, 'nit-pick' is the key phrase, as 'Seventeen Seconds' is a subtle and very solid Cure record - not their finest work, sure, but still a crucial step into new territory. And well handled it was, at that, with 'Play for Today', 'A Forest', 'Seventeen Seconds' and one or two other contenders all amounting to essential listening status for Cure fans.

Like the cover, which is limited to an abstract stain, The Cure's tenuous and minimalist sound is subtly suggestive. This one takes time to dig fully. Variety is not its main characteristic, and if you're not into mainly instrumental, atmospheric gothic post-punk, this might feel a tad underwhelming. Still, I personally appreciate this aesthetic, and while it's not my fave gothic post-punk release of the year (Joy Division and Bauhaus ftw), it's a solid album for the somber and cold days.

Basically what Tom93M eloquently said, it takes a while for the minimalism to sink in and reach its full avail. The variations from track to track are subtle and perceivable only when the volume is high enough, still it's The Cure's first solid dent to the style that would be refined to perfection in Faith. A perfect soundtrack for a cloudy, lazy, sullen day. Favorite track: Play for Today.

19/1001rThis is a very different listen to what I?m usually into. I?ve never really been much of a fan of goth or post punk, but there is some great moments of the album. I really dig Play For Today and A Forest, especially the ending where the drums are just beating by themselves. I think the atmospheric elements of the album really added to the overall experience of the album even though I?m not much of a fan of the vocal style in general. I would say this is a pretty good album even if I don?t think it has any amazing songs, it pretty much lacks any complete duds aswell.

Very much the definition of what the cure would come to be known for (with the exception of the polar opposite ALSO cure). Can?t believe I hadn?t rated it already but I love this album as a stepping stone, which is both happy and sad. Great album though

I continue my radiohead analogy: Seventeen Seconds and Fatih are The Cure's The Bends. A big upgrade from their first album that really show the bands' true potential, with some phenomenal singles. Seriously, people don't exaggerate A Forest's greatness. This record is only the beginning of an amazing career.r

I hate the goddamn Cure, but this is some of the best gloomy semi-ambient music ever made. Listen to it and watch as you become more goth by the minute. "A Forest" is possibly their best song.

Before getting "dense" and "dreamy" The Cure were like an early version of The Smiths, guitar-wise, but less talented. And less obnoxious! And with that plunka plunka bass The Cure has. Ok, not like The Smiths. If it weren't so full of filler we'd be talkin' 4 to 5 stars, but alas.

Vaguely unsettling, understated and sparse. The music is very minimalistic and spacious,
creating a distant, empty sort of atmosphere. There are a lot of instrumentals which are
at best, mildly intriguing experiments that add to the atmosphere and at worst are
utterly pointless padding. Still, the album makes for good mood music best enjoyed on a
long winter walk late at night.
