| 3.5 great | alextburns | June 29th 25 | FYI - did not go into this expecting to like it. But she does something really interesting
here. The production alternates between spaciousness and sharpness, coldness - in either case
she almost keeps the listener at arm's length. She rarely lets us sit in a particular melody
or sound for long enough to be satisfying, either (the vocal chop towards the end of David!).
I think this also contributes to this idea of distance between performer and consumer. Really
interesting dynamic to set atop lyrics which continue to be honest and pretty frank - as if
she's defending herself almost to a point where it becomes aggressive. It reminds me of
Yeezus. Early favorites are Shapeshifter and Clearblue.

| 1.5 very poor | lz41 | June 27th 25 | I am stunned by the number of bad creative choices that Lorde makes on her fourth LP. She has really lost the sauce.

| 2.5 average | virpi | October 10th 25 | A very weird album. There are some good ideas, but the production is abysmal. Lots of crappy distortion, no punch, bad vocal effects. I dislike how bland the hooks are. The songwriting in general feels very static. The album seems to be a weird compromise between artistic expression and pop appeal - and that's why it doesn't work.

| 3.5 great | cjbizzlebizzle | September 21st 25 | A mixed bag and a project that just seems like it was sometimes throwing back to 'Melodrama' and reaching for something new, kind of stuck between two worlds and not fully crystallized. There are good things to be found in 'What Was That', 'Shapeshifter', 'Man of the Year' and other tracks but the album sorely lacks one or two songs that you will remember the record for. You can tell Lorde still has the it factor and this is certainly a step up from 'Solar Power' but in the end I kind of just want to go listen to 'Melodrama' after all.

| 3.0 good | Caleb Robinson CONTRIBUTOR | June 27th 25 | Definitely better than Solar Power. But while there's a handful of songs that could be considered up there with her best, this album is still bogged down WAY too much by boring tracks that do nothing and go nowhere, and songs that build towards a climatic payoff that never ends up happening.

| 2.0 poor | MO | June 27th 25 | the minimal instrumentals and mostly mumble spoken word "singing"
is just...not fun. this does basically nothing for a whole album.
no standout tracks, it's just kind of there. a far cry from the
pep and creativity of Pure Heroine
