After an 8-year gap, Propagandhi return with At Peace, easily
their most distinct and experimental record yet. This time the
guys slowed things down and lean into their metal and progressive
sides, eschewing their light speed thrash tempos for mid-tempo
grooves and letting the songs breathe a lot more—combined with
Chris's odd vocal delivery and Todd's vocal change up to softer
melodic singing, this makes for a much less intense record than
many fans would be expecting, but it's hardly a bad thing, just
different. "Stargazing" is by far the most unique song the band
has written yet, a full-on mid-tempo progressive rock song with
clean guitars and synths that literally could have been pulled
right off of a '90s Rush album.
Being honest, At Peace is probably their weakest record since
LTMR, which means it's still VERY good, but it's just not quite
at the level of what they've done before. Musically the band is
just as great as they've always been, the problem is that that
great musicianship is attached to songs that are more predictable
and not quite as interesting as their older stuff. Aside from a
few fast rippers that sound like the standard Propagandhi (title
track, Cat Guy, Vampires Are Real) there's moments on the record
that are... dare I say... boring, something I never could have
said about any other album they've done. Still very much worth
the listen and could grow on me in time.

I don't want to scream "what the fuck is this"? But as much as I have loved Propagandhi and loved them for literally three decades, this was crap in comparison. Gone is the bite and punch. Not just musically, but lyrically. There's still some nice riffage, a few poignant verses but nothing like they used to be. It's like they got together and decided we're old...we're old and we don't have the fight left in us. So this is record is essentially the dad rock Propagandhi.
