While A Valediction was pure awesomeness, this one feels like it was made in a "let's do that again" manner, which shouldn't be an issue... but the production here is quite meh, and I can't overlook the scandalous riff-ripoff. Building an album from "stolen" material is not okay.

There's some pretty big drama surrounding the band right now, which is unfortunate. But "A Sonication" is yet another solid outting from Obscura. It's pretty awesome how they manage to take this very technical guitar shredding, intense drumming, and makes it incredibly coherent structurally. The band easily stands as one of the frontrunners in the modern technical death metal movement that puts emphasis on compression in the production that allows things to become cinematically huge in scope and atmosphere. Their rhythms are very distinct in how they approach them. Particularly, that very high octane rhythm they incorporate always has that Obscura feel to it. Sure, it's nothing particularly new for the band. But "A Sonication" sees the band honing their songwriting prowess, crafting songs that are just as meaningfully technical as they are memorable.

The music is not bad, it just sounds like a collection of B-sides from the previous record. The production, however, is
atrocious. I went back to A Valediction once I finished A Sonication and the difference is abysmal. What even happened?

While 'A Sonication' isn't Obscuras best project, it is still features some of the better songwriting in (melodic) tech death metal, some great riffs and extremely well executed instrumentation. The production is a bit lacking and there aren't any standout classics but it is still worth a few listens for any tech death fans. Unfortunate that there is all the controversy around this record but the music that is here is definitely not poor by any means.

Probably their most standard release. While, it is still a solid offering from them (especially towards the back end); the overall package doesn?t ever reach the heights of their previous records.

Mid level work here. Controversy aside, this was mostly forgettable. With a mostly new lineup, the move towards more melodic death doesn't pay off and production is a huge step down.
