4.5 superb | REANIMATED | February 7th 25 | Holy shit. Take s/t's palette but prog the fuck out of it - Mars Volta are properly weird again on what is essentially a 50-minute, 1-track album.

4.5 superb | Brabiz | March 7th 25 | Their best since Bedlam, easily. It has the more subdued vibe of their self titled album, but with the eeriness and off kilter progressive sound the band is known for. There are sounds and compositions that feel in-debted to prog rock of the past, mainly a lot of moments and songs that felt similar to So era Peter Gabriel, and some Pink Floyd-esq Fretless basslines. It strides the line of experimental and genuinely catchy in a way the band has not done in over a decade at this point.

2.0 poor | Your #1 Most Loved Semiaquatic, Egg-Laying Mammal | April 11th 25 | Yeah...I just don't get it. This was one of my most anticipated albums in a while but it was very disappointing in my opinion. Yes, the cohesion/flow is admirable, but this kinda just sounds like a few very talented musicians dicking around in a studio for 50 minutes. So many tracks come and go without leaving any sort of impression or lasting impact. For me, it's about on the same level as the S/T album, if not a little worse. Who knows, maybe it'll grow on me.

4.0 excellent | ShapeOfJizzToCum | April 12th 25 | Honestly it took a lot of growing and giving it its own time/space but I wound up really liking self titled a lot. So I guess my opinion on this comes with that grain of salt but I think S/T deserves way more of a chance from a lot of people, and this takes that sound in a spicier direction that some of those people might enjoy more although I don't see it converting many either. Personally loving this so far as well though.

4.0 excellent | ShadowOfTheCitadel | February 16th 25 | I need to digest it more, having only heard it a couple of times - but I am picking up what they're putting down. It's very weird, though. Also, Cedric is god on this. I think the guy can be considered as having his second golden age in this recent era of the band.

4.0 excellent | StrizzMatik | February 7th 25 | One listen in and this is most definitely what the s/t should have been - showing off TMV"s ability to write great hooks and concise songs without sacrificing the progressive weirdness they're known for. They're still not going back to the manic craziness of Frances or Goliath and the record is still understated and subtle like the s/t, but there's a LOT more of that signature TMV experimental and prog feel in this than the minimalist, stripped-back stylings of the s/t. It's pretty good y'all

4.0 excellent | Deadwing42 | April 16th 25 | In many ways, this feels like a "return to form" for the band, but not a "return to sound."
In other words, I can't say that this sounds like the first three or four Volta records, but
for the first time since the band's early days, they feel fully tapped into the experimental
weirdness that made them stand out among their peers. Jazz, trip-hop, and pop are more
fitting genre tags for this than metal or even rock; those looking for wild bursts of
spastic guitars will be left scratching their heads. But if you give these songs some time
to breathe, you'll notice that there is a creative intensity at play that is so purely The
Mars Volta. While I'm left wanting a few more moments that stand out and grab me,
particularly in the second half, paying attention to the smaller sonic details opens up an
intoxicating and unique vibe that is simply unlike anything else I have heard, and it is
very much worth revisiting. I like every Volta album, but this is the most uninhibited
they've been since Bedlam, and therefore their best since that time.

4.5 superb | nickha0 | April 11th 25 | The Mars Volta have found their groove again on this one. Just a very tightly constructed,
excellently produced album with enough of their vintage flair to satisfy this oldhead while
pushing their sound in really interesting directions. Their best effort since Frances The Mute or
Bedlam IMO.

4.5 superb | Comatorium. | April 11th 25 | Very very easily their best since Noctourniquet. Sounds like speeding through the freeways in west Texas. And when it ended and I went back to Frances the Mute, it didn?t snap into focus as inferior and less than, which has been the case with just about every release since Noctourniquet. Welcome back, dudes.
