After moving into more mainstream territory with Goo, the Youth aligned themselves more strongly with the rock music surrounding them (at least as far as the mainstream was concerned) than they ever had before. Dirty was Sonic Youth flirting with the idea of being megastars, and it worked for them. "100%" is one of the all-time great albums openers - swaggering, confident, and as catchy as AIDS. "Sugar Kane" repeats the trick to slightly less impressive effect, yet it remains one of the best rock songs of 1992. "Swimsuit Issue" and "Drunken Butterfly" rank as two of Kim Gordon's best songs, and "Wish Fulfilment" is gorgeous. "Youth Against Fascism" even introduces Ian McKaye into the mix, and overall the album presents a more directly political Sonic Youth than any of their other albums, before or since, have. While not quite as good as Goo, Dirty remains a vital document for all Sonic Youth fans, and a great rock album for everyone else.

one of the brattiest rock albums I have ever heard and most of it is done tastefully and at some point this might have even been a five but some of it seems a lil tired

This one and Experimental Jet Set will always have a special place i my heart, since it was the first 2 albums by Sonic Youth i bought when i was a teen. Both albums have a lot of shorter and direct tunes which made a whole thing easier to enjoy. While Experimental Jet Set was more on pop and soft side, in Dirty the band gets on a more agressive punk-rock mode to mix with their trademark sound.

Absolutely exhilarating, ugh. Kim Gordon's performance here is the ultimate equivalent of ear sex. Just listen to Orange Rolls, Angels Spit and you'll understand what I mean. Much like with Goo, the album represents Sonic Youth just being Sonic Youth doing what they do best - cranking out noisy bangers left & right without any problems.

Butch Vig was the dude at the time. Producing for Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins and L7, as well as starting Garbage, he was a major actor within the early 90s indie rock scene. And like any of his 90s works, Dirty sounds like a product of its time: some grunge parts here and there, wild distortions throughout the whole record, pop sensibilities to appeal to the "grand public" with "Sugar Kane". The whole lot constitutes a damn fine rock record, however plagued by being too long, grating vocals here and there, and kinda bad songs - compared to the fire bangers that are "Sugar Kane" or "JC". And once again after Goo, the Kim tracks are fire, and Lee proves is a great singer on top of a gifted guitarist.
