As someone who has loosely followed Backxwash since "God Has Nothing..." it is impressive how this artist continues to evolve and a lot of hard work has paid off and culminated in their best release yet in 'Only Dust Remains'. One thing that was instantly impressive are the beats and backing tracks often using vocal samples layered over piano, strings and other beautiful live instruments. The blend of sounds creates a beautiful backdrop to and a serious, sometimes dark atmosphere to coalesce with some of the realest and most intense lyrics in hip hop. The record is strong from end to end but some highlights are the entirety of the assault that is 'Wake Up', the layering in the unique beat on 'Undesirable', the bars in '9th Heaven' and the mood that the title track concludes the album with. A lot of it feels bittersweet but there is beauty in the music and expression on this project.

Backxwash has built a career out of exorcism - both in the personal and the sonic sense. Only Dust Remains continues this path of catharsis, but where previous records embraced raw aggression and occult horror, this one feels more stripped-back, more deliberate in its decay. The industrial-tinged beats remain, but there's a new spaciousness to them, allowing the weight of her words to linger like echoes in a burned-out cathedral. Her work has always been punishing, but this is straight-up haunting.
