dark, evil and moody just like Toby Driver described. fans of Scott Walker's The Drift will like this one, especially if they like some jazz thrown in.

There was a review on rateyourmusic that pretty much said this reminds them of Choirs of the Eye minus the metal. I would pretty much agree, except also strip the wide eyed wonder that album made me have. Toby Driver is dead.

While there's still glimpses into Toby Driver's genius here, the overall product doesn't have much direction. Coyote feels like it would be a debut record from Kayo Dot because it's trying to figure out what to do with the insane amount of composition ideas. It's not necessarily a bad album, but it's not good either.

So far I'm going to go with a 3. The way I feel about this album is how I felt when I first listened to "Lambency"; I know I enjoy it but I'm not achieving maximum enjoyment. As with everything Kayo Dot, it'll take some time before it "clicks", but when it does, I'll probably soil myself.

Kayo Dot's weakest album. Most of these songs paddle around, directionless, and end without having gone anywhere. Opener "Calonyction Girl" is the exception-- it has some cool riffs, and though the violin is a little nauseating at times, overall the song works.

no, no, no! this one is one of the greatest, most haunting records you'll ever hear. it sounds like anthropomorphic creatures of some sort having a cacophonous, lantern-tinged ritual deep in a mystical wood. the emotional aspect of this album is beyond words; I'd recommend this to anyone.

Coyote is frequently regarded as Kayo Dot's weakest effort. I think it's about on par with their last release, Blue Lambency Downward. That isn't a good thing, because I didn't really like that album either. The issue with Coyote is that it is just, well, kind of boring. Most of these songs paddle around, directionless, and then end. Maybe that's because this is supposedly a long-form composition; either way, it's not very interesting music. Opener "Calonyction Girl" is the exception-- it has some cool riffs, and though the violin is a little nauseating at times, overall the song works. 2.2
