| 4.0 excellent | armfarm | March 21st 10 | the whole album is a big F-you to all the radio listeners that only listened to Time To Pretend or Kids off their last album. Congratulations is way more focused, while being more experimental with their sound. Theres still the pop hooks, but they are way more subtle. And "Siberian Breaks" the 12 minute song in the middle of the album wont help casual listeners any. MGMT craft a beautiful album instead of an LP with 2 or 3 standouts.

| 5.0 classic | truthliesverbs | June 16th 10 | I dug a couple tracks from the first record (especially the perfectly written “The Youth”) and kind of let my opinion of MGMT rest. I hadn’t heard about them for a while until they were nominated for a grammy.
I must say, that with this second album the direction they have taken has brought them much more into the realm of music I adore. A huge Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd/Bowie vibe coming across. This record has honestly blown me away. This isn’t just some genre exercise- MGMT is actually contributing to and expanding on the theme of Psychedelic Rock. This is not pastiche, this stuff is inspired.
I thought the first album was okay and was anxious to hear what they would do next. Even if I hadn’t heard that album, Congratulations would have caught my ear right away. This is intelligent pop music; this is well written, thought out, composed music.

| 3.0 good | Kiran EMERITUS | March 21st 10 | Fun, 60's psych-pop that shouldn't come as a huge surprise to anyone who made it into the second half of Oracular Spectacular without rerouting back to Time to Pretend and Kids over and over again. It's hopelessly indulgent but that's sort of the point; MGMT have something to prove. The lack of singles is testament enough of the distaste for commercial success the band were more than vocal about and as such, Congratulations is a 'take us seriously' record from a band who made their mark by being a little less serious than everyone else at the time.

| 4.0 excellent | oyoungster | February 17th 11 | This album grew on me more than, I think, any other album I've ever had the pleasure of indulging in. I went into with fairly low expectations after being slightly disappointed by the single "Flash Delirium". But after seeing the song "Siberian Breaks" live, something just clicked. This album is killer. It's the weirdness. I mean, that song is about SURFING IN SIBERIA!! What else need I say?

| 4.5 superb | Drumline161 | April 28th 10 | Does anyone ever think that some people just rated this album without listening to it? I do not see how you can rate this lower than 3.5

| 5.0 classic | BigSur | February 29th 16 | This has to be the album of the decade, or at least top 5. Shit is bliss.

| 3.0 good | skippingboy123 | January 4th 11 | "It's Working"- 7, "Song For Dan Treacy"- 7, "Someone's Missing"-7, "Flash Delirium"- 9, "I Found a Whistle"-7, "Siberian Peaks"- 9.5, "Brian Eno"-8, "Lady Dada's Nightmare"- 6, "Congratulations"- 9.5:"70=3.5" (I think it's more of an album than Oracular Spectacular, its flows really good; ending witch a great song)

| 4.5 superb | crabman | December 4th 10 | If people would judge this album by its own merits instead of comparing it to Oracular Spectacular they would find out that its much better. Besides the singles, OS wasn't that great anyway. Its unfair they are getting such criticism because they decided to change their sound a little bit, because if they would have made another OS, they would have been accused of stagnating and tossed aside into the pile of other "indie pop" bands. Congratulations rules

| 2.5 average | CrazyFool84 | April 22nd 10 | In attempting to discard the success that their debut Orcular Spectacular brought them, the band's focus now seems to be on NOT getting singles played, and rather that the album works as a whole. This idea would be respectable, if the album actually could pull that feat off. Really, this feels like a rag-tag collection of songs that don't fit together in any way I can decifer. I get that artists can get overwhelmed by sudden success, but this attempt to thoart their previous good fortune seems extremely confusing and made for a pretty disappointing listen. I'm sure that this process of alienating their fanbase will show them who their really fans were - those who stuck around - if that's really worth something. (2.7/5)

| 4.5 superb | Introu1 | August 8th 20 | Really underrated, more than half of the album are bangner and Siberian Break iis just perfect, a masterpiece of a song.
Bump |
| 2.9 good | Erwann S. EMERITUS | August 16th 19 | I can't help but feel some sympathy for this album as it tries to emancipate itself from the mastodon singles that defined, and still define, the band. Sometimes it's awesome (t/t, the end of Siberian Breaks), at other times it sounds like tame psych pop.
Bump |
| 3.5 great | BeneaththeDarkOcean | May 9th 14 | Greatly expands on the psychedelic tendencies of the latter half of Oracular Spectacular, and is all the better for it. A twisted reflection on fame and popularity in the music world.
Bump |
| 4.0 excellent | sarcasgnostic | October 9th 13 | I can understand how this album would disappoint some of the fans MGMT made with the pop single-heavy Oracular Spectacular, but really I wasn't expecting the band to prove themselves to be so well-read, self-aware, creative, and original. Props to these guys.
Bump |
| 4.5 superb | iGuter | March 10th 13 | MGMT make a solid, slow psychidelic pop album while sucking out all noticeable indie pop influence. In return, they suck out most of the joy from their previous album's fun vibe and feel that they should fully forget their fan base to avoid airplay.
Bump |
| 3.5 great | BodhisattvaWhoHears | February 21st 11 | Pop done right... I don't see whats so bad about it, great instrumentation, good experimentation for a pop album, all around a nice album...
Bump |
| 2.0 poor | pauldrakedsd | February 9th 11 | Not worth my time or money. This album was suppose to be good, but they just got more produced and less unique. All of the songs just sound the same, and very little catchy-ness.
Bump |
| 0.0 | duckpride82 | December 15th 10 | "Congratulations" is MGMT's blatant statement that they no longer want to have anything to do with the hit singles that gave them their popularity. The album has wonderful moments, like the satyrical "Congratulations," and the epic "Siberian Breaks," but overall, the songs are fairly mediocre.
Bump |
| 3.5 great | hellblau | December 4th 10 | Once you get used to the idea that this is not Oracular Spectacular this album is actually pretty good. Whoever mastered the album is an idiot though, they put worst tracks first. By the time you get into the meat of the good stuff towards the middle of the album you've already lost all interest. Try reversing the song order in iTunes, it's a bit better. As for the songs themselves, they definitely lack the immediacy of the previous album, instead going for a sort of subdued orchestrated synth-pop. There are some genuinely enjoyable moments in the melodies, arpeggios and Beatles like mid-stride theme changes contained in songs such as 'I Found A Whistle', 'Siberian Breaks', 'Lady Dada's Nightmare', and 'Congratulations'.
Bump |
| 0.0 | Alameda | July 21st 10 | It's not bad. And it's not unlistenable nor annoying. But it lacks the imagination and story telling and nostalgia of Oracular Spectacular.
Bump |
| 2.5 average | jessiedemolish | July 9th 10 | Nothing spectacular. Its very spacey and loses my interest half-way through the first track. It's good music to fall asleep to.
Bump |
| 3.0 good | NickelbackFTL | June 20th 10 | I know they're trying to avoid being even more hip and trendy after everyone and their mom started listening to "Time to Pretend" and "Kids," but making uber-catchy synthpop was what MGMT was good at. There are a few gems, but the majority of this album is pretty boring.
Bump |
| 3.5 great | nabrazune | June 10th 10 | Great modern psych-rock with a lot of nice surf rock vibes running through it.
Bump |
| 2.5 average | TheAlmightyBungler | May 23rd 10 | MGMT have pretty much become a new band with this one. Too bad it's nothing we can't get out of a Flaming Lips or Dan Deacon record. no real standout tracks, but props to the Eno recognition. WHO WOULD'VE EVER GUESSED MGMT LIKES BRIAN ENO?!?
Bump |
| 3.0 good | Boogeyman | May 14th 10 | Grew on me... still not as pop gold as Oracular Spectacular, but I have to give it to them for going with art over fame. "I Found a Whistle" and "Brian Eno" are awesome...
Bump |
| 0.0 | Bitchfork | May 1st 10 | This album shows MGMT trying to disown their fairly infectious indie pop stylings for a more sarcastic and eclectic rock sound. They haven't lost their hooks by any means necessary, and they've gotten for more arty: so that's not what hinders it from a higher score. There's some disconnect, though, and I can't put my finger on it.
Bump |
| 3.0 good | Aids | April 27th 10 | This is nothing spectacular but it's definitely not bad. Pretty catchy but overall just
kinda boring. Still, it's probably worth at least a few listens and I could see myself still
enjoying this years later, if only mildly. The last half of the album (from Siberian Breaks
on) is actually pretty rulesauce for the most part.
Oh, and probably one of the worst album covers I've ever seen.
Bump |
| 3.5 great | mvdu | April 13th 10 | Sounding somewhere between the Shins and the Flaming Lips, MGMT have created a good indie record - you won't like it as much as any Shins album so far, but the experimentation is a lot more interesting than what the Flaming Lips do.
Bump |
| 3.5 great | laterenima | March 21st 10 | Not as great as 'Oracular Spectacular', but I still enjoyed it enough to get away from the heavier stuff.
