4.0 excellent | Antonius | January 5th 25 | Bringing experience from his work with Big Big Train during the nine-year hiatus, singer/guitarist/keyboardist Rikard Sjoblom becomes once again the creative force behind the Swedish prog rock act. The album is centered around the second track 'Out In The Open', a sprawling, 25-minute epic track of pure Beardfish. With the band's recognizable sound serving as a guiding light, in this five-part track you can hear old-school Yes ('Overture'), Genesis ('Oblivion'), and even Pink Floyd ('Around the Bend'). The follow-up 'Beating Hearts' is probably the highlight of the album for me: both creative and imaginative, this arrangement features various keyboard ruminations which are blended with acoustic guitars and polyrhythmic grooves. The album's shortest track 'In the Autumn' has an underlying medieval melody and features Amanda Ortenhag in the vocals. Her duet with Sj0blom creates some eclectic vocal harmonies and marks another highlight in this release. 'Torrential Downpour' is a stretched epic clocking around 8 minutes and talks about the death of Sjoblom's father. Overall, Songs For Beating Hearts is an album that has consistent musical and lyrical themes that are repeated throughout, a typical attribute of prog rock releases. It picks up where the magnificent +4626-Comfortzone left off nine years ago and despite that the band has been away for some years, they still carry that same quirky retro prog that reminds the 70s prog sound garnished with wonderful modern elements. Recommendations: "Beating Hearts", "Pt.2 - Oblivion", "In the Autumn"
