a weird ass album the result of record label interference in which they demanded an lp instead of the intended ep so atg just tack on some live tracks lmao. lindberg shows he actually can do some proper and decent vox on some songs but then goes back to utter shit on others, and world returned is just a crappy wannabe neoclassical instrumental

One of those albums that's so good you wish it was longer. Really an EP with three live tracks tacked on the back, but the original tunes are infectious, melodic and savage all at the same time. A sign of the great things to come on their next album.

It was very hard to decide which album is greater, Terminal Spirit Disease or Slaughter of the Soul because first one is the groundwork for "Gothenburg sound" and second one is the peak achievement in that sound. Finally i decided for the first one. Those only six new At the Gates songs have launched a hundreds of new bands with similar sound and second largest death metal wave. Music is at the same time melodic and very harsh, without any unnecessary sound decorations, while Slaughter of the Soul has more tougher sound with cleaner production. Finally, particular attraction to this album gives Thomas with his unique infernal vocal which does entirely concur with lyrics.

Slaughter of the Soul may be At the Gates' undisputed hit, but Terminal Spirit Disease is my personal favorite. Not quite as polished as its successor, it is harder edged than SOTS, and it is more diverse in its sound.
