Michael Stipe takes center stage on this musical monument. One of the most tender and fragile albums ever, with stadium style sing-alongs like Everybody Hurts, Man On The Moon or emotionally-charged closer Find The River. Stunning

'Nightswimming'. The keenest and most beautiful ache of nostalgia. There is something so very special about that song. As for the rest of the album, these songs are excellent and cohesive. I love the wandering strings and keys.

5/1001rAutomatic For The People is a boring and at times uninspired album with a lot of songs just kinda blending together to create a sense of nothingness. When it shines, it shines bright though with obvious rock radio classics like Everybody Hurts and Man On The Moon. But again the rest of the album is made up of inferior versions of basically the same songs. The only songs who really manages to escape the pitfalls of the others are The Sidewinders Sleeps Tonight and Ignoreland by mixing up the pretty basic formula of the rest of the album with interesting vocal melodies or added distortion. - I relistened to it, and though most of my original thoughts still hold true, the rest of the album isn?t as bad as I initially thought, so I raised it half a rating up.

I might be a bit biased since this album is very special for me, but this really is the highest point of R.E.M. for me. In it you can find hints of the group's jangle-pop past (The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite and Ignoreland) and their reconstruction of their sound (basically the rest of the album). It's often melancholic, sometimes downright depressive but Stipe's voice and instruments fit perfectly. This harmony of emotions and music makes it the best R.E.M. album for me.

Automatic For The People is a very nice, dark hued chamber-pop album. There is a great sense of theatrical bombast on this album which is rarely seen on R.E.M albums. Containing classics like 'Everybody Hurts', 'The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight' and 'Find The River', this is one of the best examples of R.E.M in their 'imperial' phase and an easy release to recommend to people new to the band. That said, I still prefer the more aggressive sound of the earlier I.R.S albums like 'Document'.

R.E.M. is by far one of my favorite groups. This album and Murmur is lot of the reason why. The songwriting is wonderful, as well the instrumentation.

R.E.M.'s best album, and one of the greatest albums ever made. It's perfectly paced, and always succeeds in keeping things interesting and beautiful. It slowly reels you in until the midsection. Here, where so many albums dip into mediocrity, songs keep getting more interesting and foot-tapping, with a couple of breathers before the finale. The last act is incredible. "Man on the Moon," "Nightswimming," and finally "Find the River" flow perfectly into each other to an immensely satisfying, peaceful ending with the promise of more journeys to come. This album is a light at the end of a tunnel.

R.E.M. is a band that has many big singles. I think that most of those that were not very big are the best ones though such as "Drive" and "The Sidewinder leeps Tonight" on this album. Great album to have if you wanted to buy an R.E.M. album.

A classic. It never fails to amaze me. This is where R.E.M. used noisy guitar the best.
"Wait a minute? Noisy guitar? Where?", you may ask. It starts with "Drive", which wouldn't do much for me if it weren't that powerful electric guitar that adds more depth to the song's feel. It comes back again as a wall of feedback during the bridge in "Try Not To Breathe", but to a incredibly melancholic effect! This is where I suddenly realized how a feedback noise could actually drive some real emotions! Then, after the strangely upbeat "Sidewinder", the poignant "Everybody Hurts", the "filler" instrumental (those strange noises? guitar! and feedback again!). I don't see it as "filler", though. To my ears, it's an interlude between the previous song and heavy-themed "Sweetness Follows", a gorgeuos song about important issues like family and death. And the highlight of this song is the feedback guitar solo, which sounds like someone screaming in pain. It moves me every time.
And this is still side one! Side two is a bit lighter, but it raise the same questions about life and mortality; "Nightswimming" is a great metaphor about innocence lost; "Find The River", with great three-part harmonies, is again about mortality. I don't really care much about "Ignoreland" and "Star Me Kitten", but they are good song anyway.
Oh well, summarizing, an evocative, satisfying listen.
