4.5 superb | Dmax28 | February 4th 25 | Best overall effort since Metropolis Pt 2. This is great

4.0 excellent | Gibleson | February 17th 25 | Their best front-to-back effort since Octavarium. "Dead Asleep" in particular is SO good.

3.5 great | Mitch | February 16th 25 | This would have easily gotten a 4 if that last track was 10 minutes shorter.

3.5 great | Kars Landman | February 7th 25 | This is literally the record these guys would have released in 2011 if Portnoy stayed. It really
sounds like a follow-up to Black Clouds & Silver Linings. LaBrie sounds fine, great production
(finally!), but Rudess really needs to find some interesting keyboard sounds...

0.0 | GoldenGuy444 | January 31st 25 | You know, I don't think any of the tracks so far are too bad. They aren't the "magic" that was whatever late 90s early 00s dream theater was, but it has some fun moments. Midnight Messiah as a really excellent guitar section near the end that's been stuck in my head since I've heard it.
The album's art direction is dreadful. I get it's is not important to the music directly but they do help define an album's visual identity. And this Ai slop is not cutting it in the slightest here. It makes it feel like no one *really* cares.
At least with The Astonishing, you could tell that James Petrucci and whoever had a direct visual identity for the album, for as ugly as it was still.

3.5 great | Antonius | April 21st 25 | After nearly 15 years of passable releases, I think its fair to say that Parasomnia is a triumphant return to form. It is concept album exploring sleep disorders and the involuntary reactions they create such as sleepwalking and night terrors. It is a dark, heavy, and focused release, reminding something from the Dream Theater of old. The return of Portnoy behind the drum kit brings enthusiasm and a breath of fresh air in the band. Portnoy brings back his signature drum fills and flair in songwriting, leaving behind the technical focus brought by Mangini in the last few years. A notable change in Parasomnia is found in the work of Jordan Rudess who sacrifices his keyboard shenanigans for a remarkably restrained, more song-driven focus. The same applies to John Petrucci, who prioritizes down-tuned metal riffs and complementary solos over tangential shred-fests. Tony recommends: "Dead Asleep", "Night Terror", "Midnight Messiah".

4.0 excellent | Trey STAFF | March 19th 25 | Despite essentially sticking to the same formula they’ve been employing since bringing on Jordan Rudess, Parasomnia still feels like a breath of fresh air. Maybe it's because this is their darkest, most guitar-driven album since Train of Thought. Maybe it’s the smattering of modern ideas or the way the songs manage to strike a perfect balance – structured enough to feel cohesive yet intricate enough to deliver the prog elements Dream Theater fans love. Maybe it’s a little of everything. Of course, Mike Portnoy’s return plays a major role, bringing his signature flair to both the drumming and songwriting. After nearly 15 years of middling releases, Parasomnia is a triumphant return to form – possibly their most creative, focused, and engaging work since Metropolis Pt. 2.
