This is unironically his best album since Holy Wood.

This definitely feels like a chapter 1. The tracklist does a lot of building, especially with the closing tracks, and it never hits a proper feeling of conclusion. With that said, this album has a great flow to it, and the classic Antichrist sounding song Nod If You Understand does not feel out of place and at odds with the rest of the tracklist, as this style has on his other more recent releases. However, I do wish there were more tracks like this, notably the single exclusive Front Toward Enemy. It would?ve been nice to have another rager in the back half of the album. Otherwise, this is the tightest Manson and co. have sounded since the 2000s. The vocals feel thought out and purposeful rather than the mindless, copy-pasted crooning of recent albums. Boasting melodies are both tight and memorable. Not to mention some great instrumental work, where everything sounds catchy and properly atmospheric, showing off some big Post Punk influences. The album mixes a lot of Mechanical Animals sounds with moments that sound ripped straight out of The Cures discography. It is a great balance, and the heavier elements add a lot of flavor and impact here and there. Out of the tracklist, I did not care much for Sacrilegious which sounds obnoxiously similar to Hello by Oasis, and the song Meet Me In Purgatory drags down the runtime a bit, feeling like it doesnt stand out much. Which is an issue considering how short and digestible the album is otherwise. r

It is an album that feels closer to the Holy Wood era of the band, but I wouldn't call that the best thing they released in years, it is a focused and fairly careful bunch of songs, but the core lyrical theme (loads of self-pity) feels incredibly overused and (with the still pending investigations) does not sit well for me to listen to, even if I followed the band for decades. Musically it does not go out of it's way to do anything all that interesting apart from riding on 90s-00s Manson nostalgia baits and that's a big shame, somehow Manson still being chill/half on autopilot on We Are Chaos was way more surprising and pleasant to digest than this.
