5.0 classic | bnelso55 | August 26th 16 | The almost improvisational feel of the "Prélude" belies its masterful composition. A closer look at its inner workings reveals an intricate assortment of motile, maturing themes being passes back and forth amongst the instruments, as well as a potent sense of purpose on the part of its maker. Debussy employs many of his most characteristic compositional methods and a hefty dose of orchestral shading and voicing to allow woodwinds to carry fluid, atmospheric melodic ideas across a subtle yet progressive foundation of strings, horns, and harp. Ambiguous chord progressions, chromaticism, and shifting meters all culminate here to evoke the oneiric landscape explicated by the Mallarmé poem that inspired the piece. This is a work of genius in every sense.
