3.5 great | c0nf1n3d | November 15th 24 | If anything, "A Whole New Sound" is a pure indicator that millennials (such as myself) have become more abundant within the Disney company. Those who grew up on the 'Punk Goes POP' albums clearly hatched this idea and somehow got it greenlit. The amount of licensing and clauses within contracts must've been a hassle alone just to get some of the tracks to appear on here, such as Simple Plan's cover of 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight'. Rumored in this is the band Yellowcard's championing of this project, with them being closely tied to the Disney company after a fluke encounter at a Comic Con a few years ago. If true, it checks out as Yellowcard's 'A Whole New World' is one of the stronger tracks on this record, along with the offerings from Magnolia Park, Tokio Hotel, Boys Like Girls, and the ol' reliable Mayday Parade. Not everything here works; New Found Glory's good intentions don't carry a good track, and Meet Me @ The Altar butcher 'You've Got a Friend in Me'. Finally, clearly there were multiple mixers on this project, given songs like LOLO's 'Let It Go' having a distortion//muted vocal mix in contrast to the others. If you're a Disney fan even slightly, this is absolutely worth the listen for pure fascination alone. If you're indifferent or not, pass on this one. I'd personally be interested to see this concept explored more in the future.
