| 4.5 superb | Tb1114 | November 14th 24 | As alluded to in an interview about this album, the album was composed first as poems with music later composed around the structure of the poetry. This album, like Now Only and MI2020, is more readily enjoyed when listened to as poetry with musical backing. Luckily for me, these albums tend to be my favorite works from Phil. I find his Zen-influenced poems quite beautiful, and the often experimental noisy folk-scapes he accompanies them with quite provocative and appropriate, in spite of and at times empowered by his lo-fi production. He continues to give Sunn O))), Earth, Tim Hecker, Stereolab, and other drone musicians the respect they deserve. As well as poet Joanne Kyger. This album also, surprisingly, evokes Jim Morrison, the Dude, and anti-colonialism. In ways that are jarring, but still make sense. If it weren't for his absolute skill in writing Zen-influenced poetry, I would rank this album much lower. His boyish voice layered within his more violent and loud music have never meshed well for me. There are some tracks here I'd rather skip because of it. Despite these off moments, this album still comes together in a complete and realized way. The combination of eclectic songwriting with the more recurrent themes and atmosphere on this album (sound-wise, this feels like Phil's "A Moon Shape Pool") make for a long, winding, yet somehow cohesive record best enjoyed when focused on the poetry. Maybe this is his rap album? It does feature hi-hats. /mini rev, too busy to want to do a full one

| 3.5 great | didnt ask to be staff, was made staff anyway, then got demoted for not doing staff stuff | November 12th 24 | Mount Eerie's work is difficult for me to stomach as is, and now at 80 minutes of runtime all the more so. I understand the meaning behind this approach and I genuinely appreciate the unique voice in the bare naked subtle-folk movement Phil Elverum has carved for himself, but I again and again have severe difficulty enjoying or even forcing myself through his albums. All aims achieved to great success, yet so absolutely uninviting (obviously) that I don't want to hear it ever again.

| 3.5 great | Erwann S. EMERITUS | November 4th 24 | After a 2020 record that sported its name real good, Elverum delivers a sprawling take of another classic soundscape of his: drony noisy avant-folk. While the best moments here rival previous instances of this particular version of him, the lengthy runtime makes Night Palace fall behind his 2009-2012 trilogy.
