I can respect this---the arrangements are pretty fantastic and I can get behind the whole "male sexuality" considering I am male but that doesn't really mean I enjoy it. It's not that I think it's bad, it's that I don't have a great time jamming

Holy, Holy is fantastic and the instrumentation, energy and songwriting is great but the lyrics, vocal stylings and personality is a barrier to enjoying the excellence that lies beneath it. That part about coming and stallions, it hurts to hear.

I worry very much about my rating. Because I always rate black midi / adjacent ?new sound? music like 4.5 and then never listen to it again. But this does get a 4.5 because of the balls it takes to call your album THE NEW SOUND and have it just be freaky jazz prog so in a sense he delivers there. I respect the hell out of this album and the lyrics are maybe the most evocative Ive heard this year. But do I LOVE it? Maybe not yet, but I trust myself to come back and love it for real. Just like Greep loves other men fucking his wife !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The (ex?) black midi singer comes through with his debut solo record ?The New Sound? and I wouldn?t say it?s a ?new sound?, but I will say its an explosive and explorative take on Latin rock and jazz-rock. This debut record is filled to the brim with all the spastic and chaotic sounds you would come to expect from a Black midi release. On top of the fact the very boisterous and memorable vocal style of Geordie is just adding to that chaotic energy being put on display. This is a whip lash of a listening experience and it still blows me away that these kinds of ideas can just work. Definitely a fever dream of a listening experience, but all those should listen to this at least once.

Kinda like his now-dead progeniture Black Midi, Greep's music mainly treads manic and angular rock territories - but this time his "music hall vocals" get some shiny latin and jazz contours, which is for the best IF ONLY he used them more.
