I adore fucking everything about this. The painfully robotic rhythm section, the insane shredding (by Strokes standards), Julian's raw, overcompressed, sometimes half-drunk vocals and songwriting, the pretty bad and bloated yet more accessible (?) production, the crazily large number of songs here (14!), the unusually gloomy/pensive/IDK what the right word is (again, by Strokes standards) vibe looming over the entire album and especially in songs like "Heart In a Cage" and "On the Other Side", and how unfocused all of it is. It's basically a mid life crisis in audio form and I love it.

Starts off decent, but quickly deteriorates after the fourth track and becomes what's easily The Strokes' most bloated, boring, confused record.

This could be prob my fave from The Strokes..The band maintains its identity and leaps onto other shores from loads of contemporary fave bands of mine (Muse, QOTSA, Interpol, Radiohead etc...). First 4 tracks are awesome, Vision of Division and kinda dig Electricityscape. The album meanders and have some tracks that are major step-backs. I know the line is thin but some times not only Casablancas but the whole band seems to be drunk. Still rate 3.5 cause it has some of their darkest tracks.

I changed my mind about this album, nowadays I think it is too long. If it had just, maybe, 11 tracks on it, would be on the same level with Is this It and Room on Fire.

Well, as this was a kind of step down (and a let down for the fans) of the band, this album will not, actually, alienate to the non-Strokes fan, but, as even the most awful thing has its moments, "First Impressions of the Earth" is not a completely poor album, but it's a fair job from a band that could do more than that.

The Strokes always seem to have a sound that puts them apart from other bands of the alt. rock genre and this trait is not absent in this album. Many fans of the first two albums say that this album doesn't sound like The Strokes or that it isn't as good as the previous albums due to it's shift in tone, but I feel this ideas are misguided. rThis album is solid and has some of my favorite songs by The Strokes on it. While the album as a whole isn't their best work and some of it drags, it still adds up to something great.

It's hard to find an angle to progress after the first two albums of anything. I think this album should have been cut in half but I do think that it was a step that needed to be taken by the strokes. The vocals sound great, but the vocal melodys could have been 10 times better.
