| 4.0 excellent | to have ambitions was my ambition | November 9th 24 | Primal Scream has the reputation of trying to reinvent themselves with each album, but also
notorious for their hit-or-miss resume. Seeing the cool cover art of Come Ahead and knowing
that they collaborated with the even cooler David Holmes, I was expecting acid-infused
psychedelia and soundtrackesque trips akin to Vanishing Point. Instead, I got 70s-style
disco/funk/soul and in general, the coolest batch of songs I heard this year. Luckily,
there’s no sign of the silly melodies of Chaosmosis, and by the time the band departs with
Settlers Blues, reaching Nick Cave-ian heights in terms of gospel-emotionality, I’m
completely sold and my hope for the band is revitalized after 11 years of waiting.
