The Black Keys can mimic emotion, but not feel it. They've mastered the art of catchy hooks, but I've never once gotten the sense that they really mean what they're saying. Every song plays like an exercise in blues-rock style, not an outpouring of genuine emotion. The lyrics are a compilation of blues and blues-rock standbys that have been around since the 1970s or before. The one (1) good line on the album, "That's me-the boy with the broken halo," is promptly ruined by the next line: "The devil won't let me be." Really, Auerbach? Who was the first person to use a variant of that idea? Robert Johnson? Skip James? No, probably someone long before that. There is nothing interesting-or real-about this music.

Dynamic is a great word to describe this particular 2010 release. The Black Keys are a dynamic duo, and Brothers is a dynamic album. Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney play old blues with a new edge, and do so in a fashion that has both immediate likeability and real staying power. Laying down a perfect groove from the record's very first seconds, the music remains catchy and creative, from the high-register Everlasting Light, the funky attitude on Tighten Up, to terrific slower tracks as The Only One and Never Gonna Give You Up. To some it may slightly outstay its welcome, but ultimately, Brothers counts among the year's most memorable and charismatic moments, coming from a group that will likely continue to do well in the coming years.

These guys are good when you listen to 2-3 songs, not if you listen to an entire album. Nothing is truly bad but it's so safe, bland and repetitive.

Brothers might be my favorite Black Keys album, it's really funky and atmospheric. They have really fused their blues type sound with alot of other styles, especially old soul music. I feel like they are also influenced by hip hop too, and I can hear the production styles of RZA, Pimp C and Mike Dean. The Black Keys still have that lack of emotion which is odd for soul music, but it's always bothered me about their sound. Even the heavier songs are light and inoffensive. The singers monotone delivery, coupled with predictable lyrics always keep their records from being all that appealing. Still, Brothers has some of the band's best songs, and their best guitar work, so it's their strongest effort in my opinion.r

Aside from a couple songs on the album, "Brothers" is simply bland. The Keys tried too hard to push a bluesy, slow sound and altogether forgot about maintaining any hard hitting riffs. On the up side, Everlasting Light is absolutely fantastic.
