Couldn't even tell this is a band on a roll since the 80s until I looked them up properly. This could so easily pass as a new nostalgic band with a fresh, even if a little rough song-writing, building on the old alt-rock Americana and progressing in into better things. Still rough, as not every song hits quite as intended, but a fresh listen nonetheless.

"Gravity Stairs" is not a nostalgia album. It is, nonetheless, an album that feels like a long time coming because of how diligently Crowded House, no slouches in the production of divine pop music, have crafted a modern, Triple J sound heavy in groove and guitar reverb. Few could have expected such a contemporary rebrand at this autumn stage of the band's story and especially not in a manner that is as about as close as we will get to the gents of Crowded House reminding the young pups who the big dog is.
