The first mushroom cloud was a shock to us all. By the time the second appeared, and
another, and another, in tidy little rows, we knew: this was the end. As we sat waiting for
the fallout to claim us, they caught the one responsible and paraded
them through town to their inevitable execution. Kind of superfluous given what was
happening, but it's human nature, after all. Before the electricity went out, before it was
truly over, they broadcast the culprit's last words. How could someone do this? How can you
own up to ending the world? With tears in their eyes, they defiantly exclaimed:
"I had to. It was so heavy."

'Emotional Terrorist' and 'I Feel Nothing When You Cry' are some great sludge metal tracks but much of the record feels samey and nearly formulaic with the same distorted bass, guitar work and intense vocals chugging and chugging and chugging along. The project with Emma Ruth Rundle was great but this feels like it lacks the variety that one had.

Umbilical is Thou at their most straightforward - the atmospheric part of their soundscape being replaced by primal violence only hinted at in their Nirvana covers. Even though I'm a sucker for their patented atmodoomsludge, this grungey version of them proves to deliver the goods.

Every so often I accidentally listen to and review an album I really have no qualifications to review. The newest album from legendary sludge metal album Thou sees the band go back to their origins and for my money I don?t get much out of listening to this. If you?re a heavy fan of doomy sludge metal then you will love this. Heavy riffs with harrowing vocals paired with these in your face drums. But for me I have been a bigger fan of their drone metal output.

Having followed Thou's body of work only loosely and infrequently, I remember mostly being on the fence about them and their repetitive scuzzy approach to sludge and doom metal. On 'Umbilical' that approach finally bears definite undeniable fruit. I still have occasional trouble really appreciating all the finer cyclical moments of chugging guitars and general drony patience, but beyond that the album does wonders with its atmosphere and primitive instrumentation. Very little takes place, yet it all has such a gargantuan effect. Well friggin' done.

Umbilical sees Thou shift gears into a different approach to rtheir sound. Rather than the slower longer brand of sludge they rhave cultivated over the years. The Baton rouge band focuses on a rmore raw aggresive version of sludge with Punk tinges.rTldr: Its Thou what do you think? its fucking amazing
