| 3.5 great | Antonius | December 2nd 24 | On their first new album in six years, the folk troubadours return to familiar territory following their slight detour in 2018 with I'll Be Your Girl. In As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again, the rustic indie/prog band from Portland delivers its familiar balladry, mournful country blues, sprightly indie pop-rock and lilting Americana in a 67-minute zestful release. It is fair to say that in the album's eleven songs The Decemberists cover a fair amount of ground, however, the slow to mid-tempo folk rock predominates and this is where the band's strengths lie. I found the second half a bit weaker in comparison to the first, as it includes tracks like the jovial but forgettable ?Born to the Morning? and the weepy ?Never Satisfied?. It also contains the longest song that the band ever attempted - "Joan in the Garden" - a nineteen-minute prog odyssey which closes the album emphatically. Recommendations: "Oh No", "Long White Veil", "Tell Me What's on Your Mind", "All I Want is You".
