Will give it an official rating once the album ACTUALLY comes out. Ulcerate is sick, but all these rpre-ratings that mess up the best of list are pointless and whack.. rEDIT: It was great but not AOTY for me. Thier last album was much better imo.

While this is still good death metal, I find it exhausting and that it blends together into a samey soup. Theres no doubting this band is talented and very good at what they do. i just do not understand the hype behind these guys, its not for me i guess

Well to be fair Ulcerate does fit that 'thinking man's metal' tag. I don't remember if it was a guy from Pelican or other Post-Metal band who said it but that tag suits a lot of metal acts because of their changing, slow-mid paced tempo combined with intricate melodies and complex songwritings. I definitely lean towads that kind of pensive state inducing metal

Their best album so far. An incredible atmo/disso death trip with their songwriting on peak rlevels and a sense of whole unmatched in their discog. Stating this is similar to Stare is a rcrime. This album plays in a completely different league on every level. AOTY contender

Take Stare. Remove the vastness and grandeur of tracks like The Lifeless Advance or Dissolved Orders, but make the album slightly more consistently strong, with pretty much no slog points except maybe the weaker 3 (which is however immediately followed up by the welcomingly atmosphere-setting 4). You get this brutal gym playlist goldmine of an album, whose only true fault in style is the fadeout on 7, especially to be followed up by a closer that is really no different from everything that preceded it. If it had another landmark Ulcerate opener or a banging closer I could maybe have made the case it tops Stare, but as it is I cannot say it does. 4.1

No idea what people can hear in this that warrants a 2.5 or lower. I get the band is SUPER hyped up but objectively I cannot see the justification. On just the first full listen this might be better than Stare.

This is pretty great in the moment. The oppressive atmospheres, twisting atonal melodies, and lumbering tempos are top-notch. The problem is this atmospheric technical death metal band always sounds pretty much the same and the repetitiveness is still present throughout this album. Also, as great as this album is at creating these crushing moments and oppressive atmospheres, nothing really sticks as the final song comes to an end.

There was a song on here that I really liked but I can't figure out which one it is. There is no doubt this is some of the better metal drumming out there right now but at the same time it sounds like the same song for the entire record because everything outside of the drumming just blends together. A wonderful vibe at times and a band I would love to see live at some point but a record I really don't feel the need to play all that much.

Another banger from our fav dissodeath band, with a crystal-clear production and pounding compositions. Even though Cutting the Throat of God instantly becomes metal AOTY, it still cannot touch Stare Into Death and mostly Everything Is Fire.

Style over substance? No, it is style AND substance. Indeed as a piece of stylish art this album comes with clinical (kind of cold and monotonous) perfection in every aspect: songwriting, production, sound, art and so on. But it is also the highest quality in every aspect. It is great, too, that this is Ulcerates' most polished and accessible record. In comparison with its precedessor the band mixed in a lot of black and post metal love and gives every song an iconic riff.
